Marc-Andre Fleury makes hilarious comment on goalie who gives up the record goal vs. Alex Ovechkin!

Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin is getting closer and closer to breaking Wayne Gretzky ’s record of 894 goals for the most in NHL history. The Caps’ captain is only four tallies away ahead of Wednesday night’s action, and while everyone is on edge, impatiently waiting for Ovi to break the record, one goalie is feeling quite cool about it.

That is none other than Marc-Andre Fleury, who admitted on Wednesday to Jonny Lazarus, how he is relieved to not have to face Ovechkin again, especially as he seeks to beat the Great One’s record before the end of the 2024-25 season.

Fleury made the hilarious comment about being the goalie who gives up the record goal against Ovechkin:

“I’d be pissed in the moment. I’d still be pissed a few days later because then you’ll be on TV for the next many years.”

Fleury makes a valid point though. Who will be the netminder facing Ovechkin in the cage when he reaches number 895?
Last week, Ovechkin and Flower shared a touching moment on the ice. After the Wild’s win over Washington, Ovechkin made sure his teammates were coming back to give Fleury a center-ice player by play goodbye in Minnesota. With this probably being the last time Ovechkin was on the ice with the veteran goalie, he knew he had to give him a proper sent-off. Ovi was the first to greet him as they shared a hug and a laugh, and chatted a bit before the rest of the Capitals’ squad followed suit.

When Fleury was asked about Ovechkin’s gesture and what it meant to him, the beloved goalie with his signature grin, commented how privileged he feels to have played against such a talented player during his career.

Last night, Ovi made sure all of the Capitals came back on the ice to shake hands with Fleury. Now the goalie has this to say. Watch below

Fleury, who’s in his 21st and assuredly final season in the league, was the backup of the game between the Caps and Wild. He was able to watch Ovi attempt to add one more tally to his total.

Now the goaltender will be able to do so from home and not be the netminder who will be reminded of the record breaking goal over and over for years to come.
