William’s head turned sharply.
Madison had taken three weeks in Milan and Paris with friends from the club. He had barely noticed the dates beyond the childcare arrangements and the airport schedule. He assumed the twins were too young for it to matter.
“They changed after she left?” he asked.
Elena nodded. “Leo was mostly fine. But Nico…” She paused, choosing her words carefully. “He stopped trusting food that just appeared in front of him. He would only eat if he could touch it first. Feel it. Know it.”
William stared at his son.
The boy was pressing his palms into dough like he was reading something hidden inside it.
“He doesn’t reject food,” Elena said softly. “He rejects food that feels unfamiliar to his body. But if his hands meet it first, then he can accept it.”
William let the words sink in.
Then he asked, “How did you figure that out?”
For the first time, Elena’s expression changed from caution to something more private.
“My younger brother was the same way,” she said. “Back home in Michoacán. He stopped eating after my father left. My mother never forced him. She sat him by the stove and gave him dough to play with while she cooked. She used to say some children need to know food with their hands before they can trust it with their mouths.”
William looked at the clay griddle on the stove.
Madison hated that thing. Said it looked poor. Said it didn’t belong in a kitchen like theirs.

“Why were you doing this in secret?”
Elena lowered her eyes.
