UN MILLONARIO EN SILLA DE RUEDAS LLEVABA AÑOS SIN SONREÍR… HASTA VER A SU EMPLEADA DORMIDA A SU LADO !

A millionaire lived in a wheelchair and hadn’t smiled for years until he saw his employee asleep next to him .  Alejandro Villaseñor was 38 years old and lived in a huge mansion on the outskirts of Guadalajara.  The house was so large that it often seemed empty, even when there were employees walking through the halls.

From the outside everything looked perfect: manicured gardens, expensive cars in the garage, security at the entrance, and a stunning view of the city.  But inside that house the atmosphere was heavy.  There was no laughter, no long conversations, no music, only silence.  A silence that had been there for 8 years.  8 years since the day Alejandro stopped smiling.

Before the accident, Alejandro was a different man.  Those who knew him at that time remembered him as someone active, ambitious, and full of energy. He was the kind of person who would arrive at a meeting and end up being the center of the conversation without intending to.  He liked business, travel, and sports cars.

By the age of 30, he was already managing several companies he had inherited from his father and had also managed to grow the family fortune.  She had friends, went out constantly, and seemed to have total control of her life.  Everything changed in a single night, a rainy night that no one in his family could forget. Alejandro was returning from a business dinner when his car lost control on a road near the city.

The car went off the road and ended up crashing into a concrete wall.  The impact was brutal.  It took the paramedics several minutes to get him out of the vehicle.  When he woke up in the hospital, the doctors gave him the news that would change everything.  The spinal injury had been very serious. Alejandro would never walk again.

At first he thought it was a nightmare. He spent weeks waiting for someone to come into the room and say they had made a mistake.  But the days went by and reality didn’t change.  The rehabilitation was long, painful, and full of frustration.  Alejandro had never had to depend on anyone to move around, to get dressed, or to perform simple tasks.

Suddenly I needed help with everything.  That filled him with a mixture of anger and sadness that grew over time.  His friends started visiting him less.  Some didn’t know what to say, others simply disappeared.  The people who were still nearby tried to cheer him up, but each attempt seemed to irritate him more.  After almost a year of hospitals and therapies, Alejandro decided to move permanently to the family mansion.

The house had enough space to adapt everything to their new life.  Ramps, elevators, spacious rooms.  Everything was designed to facilitate her mobility in a wheelchair, but the comfort did not change what she felt inside.  Alejandro became a distant man, he spoke little, avoided visitors and preferred to spend most of his time alone in his office or looking out of the huge windows on the second floor.

The house staff knew they had to do their job discreetly. Nobody wanted to provoke one of the awkward silences that filled the house when Alejandro got upset.  Some workers didn’t last long there.  The atmosphere was too tense for many.  The only person who had constant contact with him was Rodrigo Salvatierra.

Rodrigo was the administrator of all the Villaseñor family’s companies.  She was 45 years old and had been working with Alejandro for over a decade .  When the accident happened, Rodrigo took over most of the business decisions while Alejandro recovered.  Over time, that dynamic became normal. Rodrigo would arrive at the mansion several times a week with documents, reports, and contracts that Alejandro would review without much interest.

Alejandro trusted him because he had known him for many years.  Rodrigo spoke with confidence and always seemed to have everything under control.  The house staff treated him with respect, almost as if he were the real owner of the place.  Alejandro’s mornings always followed the same routine.

He used to wake up early.  A nurse was helping him with his medication.  and then I would go down to the dining room in the house’s internal elevator.   I was having breakfast in silence while reading the news on a tablet.  Afterwards he would move to his office, where he would spend hours reviewing business reports or staring at his computer screen without really concentrating on anything.

Many times he would end up observing the garden for long periods of time.  From his desk he could see a huge jacaranda tree that bloomed every spring.  Years ago, that tree seemed beautiful to him.  Now I barely noticed it.  What I did notice was the passage of time.  Each day was similar to the previous one.

The afternoons were the worst.  As the sun began to set and the house fell silent, Alejandro felt a pressure in his chest that he didn’t know how to explain.  It wasn’t physical pain, it was something deeper, a feeling of emptiness that made him feel trapped in a life he no longer recognized as his own.

At that moment he remembered what he was like before the night of the accident.  He remembered driving around the city without thinking about anything, laughing with his friends, making plans for the future. All of that seemed to belong to someone else, to someone who no longer existed.   He often thought that people saw him as a man who had everything.

Money, a huge house, successful businesses, but nobody saw the long hours he spent silently inside that mansion.  No one saw how he avoided looking at himself in the mirror for too long or how he lay awake at night thinking about what he had lost.  In 8 years, Alejandro had learned to hide what he felt behind a cold expression.

It was easier that way .  If no one got too close, no one could notice how tired he was of that life.  One particularly quiet afternoon, Alejandro was in his office reviewing some documents when he heard movement in the hallway. New voices.  The sound of someone walking unsteadily through the house didn’t register as much.  At first, new employees were always coming and going from that mansion.

Most didn’t last very long, but that day something would be different, something that Alejandro didn’t yet know.  At that moment he was still staring at his computer screen with the same serious expression as always, 8 years without a smile, 8 years living in silence inside a house too big for a man who had stopped believing in the future.

What Alejandro did not imagine was that very soon someone would cross the threshold of that mansion and begin to change everything he thought could no longer be changed.  The morning Mariana Ríos arrived at the Villaseñor mansion began like any other for the house employees.  The sun barely illuminated the gardens when the main gate slowly opened and let an old yellow taxi pass.

The driver stopped in front of the main entrance, looked at the huge house with curiosity, and then turned to the woman sitting in the back.  Mariana took a deep breath before getting off.  He was 31 years old.  She wore her dark hair tied back in a simple ponytail and dressed in clean but humble clothes.

In one hand she held a small bag with some personal belongings.  She paid the taxi, thanked the driver, and stood for a few seconds observing the mansion in front of her.  It was the biggest house he had ever seen .  It didn’t look like a normal house. It looked more like a hotel or one of those residences you see in magazines. The gardens were perfectly maintained.

The precisely pruned trees and windows reflected the morning sky.  Mariana felt a small knot in her stomach, not from fear, but from that feeling that appears when a person enters a completely new place.  She needed that job badly, so she slung the bag over her shoulder and walked toward the front door.  Before he could knock, the door opened.

On the other side appeared Carmen, the person in charge of the house staff.  Carmen was a woman in her fifties who had been working there for over a decade.  He had a serious face and the look of someone who had already seen many employees pass through that place.  He looked Mariana up and down for a few seconds.

It wasn’t a look of contempt, but rather one of evaluation.  Then he spoke in a firm and direct voice.  You must be Mariana, the new employee.  Mariana nodded and responded with a simple smile.  Yes, ma’am.  Carmen stepped aside to let her in.  Welcome, come in.  But before we begin, I want to explain something important to you.

Mariana crossed the threshold and found herself in a huge foyer.  The ceiling was high, the floor was shiny marble, and the curved stairs led up to the second level like something out of a movie.  Everything was spotless. As they walked down the main corridor, Carmen began to speak. Things work in an orderly fashion here.  Each employee has clear tasks and defined schedules.

No serious mistakes are allowed, much less scandals.  Mr. Alejandro Villaseñor does not tolerate unnecessary interruptions.  Mariana listened attentively while observing the paintings on the walls and the enormous windows that let in the light from the garden.  Carmen continued speaking.  The gentleman hardly interacts with the staff.

If you have to talk to him, do it respectfully and only if necessary.  Mariana frowned slightly, but said nothing. Carmen continued walking until she reached the kitchen, which was almost as big as the dining room of a normal house.  There were two more employees preparing breakfast.  Carmen quickly introduced them .

This is Martín, the cook, and this is Laura, who helps with cleaning the first floor.  Mariana greeted him with a friendly smile.  Martin responded with a brief gesture while continuing to stir a pan.  Laura raised her hand and gave him a look that seemed to mix curiosity with warning.  Then Carmen explained to Mariana her main tasks: cleaning some areas of the second floor, helping with the organization of the library, and making sure that certain rooms were always ready.

Nothing too complicated, but demanding in terms of detail.  While they were talking, Mariana noticed something strange in the atmosphere.  Nobody raised their voice too much, nobody laughed.  Everything moved with an almost tense calm, as if everyone was used to keeping a low profile inside the house.  Mariana decided to ask something that had been on her mind since she arrived.  Mr.

Villaseñor lives here alone.  Carmen paused for a second before answering. Yes, for years.  Mariana nodded slowly.  Carmen noticed the question in his eyes and added something else.  The man had an accident a while ago.  He has used a wheelchair ever since.  It’s best not to ask personal questions.  Just do your job and everything will be fine.

Mariana did not respond immediately, she only nodded.  It wasn’t curiosity for gossip, it was simply human interest. After receiving basic instructions, Mariana began her first day.   She went up to the second floor with a cleaning cart and started in the main hallway.  The rooms were enormous, with elegant furniture and windows overlooking the gardens.

Everything was clean, but I still had to check every detail.  While cleaning, she heard the soft sound of an elevator opening at the end of the hall.  He looked up instinctively.  That was when he saw Alejandro Villaseñor for the first time.  He was getting out of the elevator in his electric wheelchair.

He was wearing a simple gray shirt and dark trousers.  His posture was upright, but his face was completely serious.  It wasn’t exactly an expression of anger, it was more of a tired look, like that of someone who no longer expects anything new from the day.  Alejandro was walking slowly down the hallway when he noticed Mariana.

His eyes lingered on her for a second.  Mariana stopped cleaning and watched him naturally.  He didn’t look down like the other employees did, nor did he show discomfort; he simply looked at him as he would at anyone else .  That small detail was enough to make Alejandro feel strange.  I was used to two types of reaction.

Either people avoided looking at him directly, or they regarded him with that pitying expression he hated so much.  Mariana didn’t show either of them.  Alejandro frowned slightly.  Mariana spoke in a calm voice.  Good morning.  Alejandro did not respond immediately, he only watched her for a moment longer before continuing down the corridor towards his office.

Mariana went back to work as if nothing had happened, but Alejandro, as he walked away, couldn’t help but think about something he didn’t quite understand.  This new woman had looked at him differently, without fear, without compassion, as if his wheelchair wasn’t the first thing she saw when she saw him .

And although Alejandro didn’t know it yet, that simple difference would be the beginning of something that would change his life in a way he could never have imagined.  Mariana’s first days at the Villaseñor mansion passed quickly, but also with that constant feeling that she was entering a world very different from the one she knew.  Every morning he arrived early before the sun was fully high and began his tasks silently alongside the rest of the staff.

Although everyone was polite to her, Mariana noticed that there was something in the atmosphere that did n’t quite feel normal.  It was as if everyone was always on guard against making mistakes, as if something could go wrong at any moment .  Carmen had explained to her several times that Mr. Alejandro preferred tranquility, but Mariana sensed that there was something more behind the silence that filled the hallways of the house.

The mansion was enormous and perfectly tidy, but it didn’t feel like a home.  There were no family photographs on the furniture, no visible personal mementos, and no objects that told stories.  It was as if the house existed only to function, not to be lived in.  Even so, Mariana did her job with dedication.

I did n’t want to lose that job.  I had spent several months looking for a job before finding that opportunity. She came from a humble neighborhood in Guadalajara and was used to working hard to get ahead.  That attitude helped her to stay calm, even in a place as different as that mansion.  During her first week, Mariana barely exchanged words with Alejandro.

I would occasionally see him moving through the corridors in his wheelchair or entering his office.  He was always serious, always quiet.  Nobody approached him unless it was absolutely necessary.  Carmen had even warned that they shouldn’t interrupt him while he was working. However, on the fourth day something happened that changed that silent distance between them.

That morning Mariana was organizing some books in the second-floor library.  It was a huge room with shelves that reached almost to the ceiling and a large window that let in the light from the garden.  While arranging some volumes, he noticed that several documents were mixed in among the books. He thought that maybe someone had left them there by mistake.

He decided to check them to find out where they should go.  What I didn’t know was that those papers belonged directly to Alejandro’s office. While Mariana was organizing the documents, she heard the sound of the elevator opening at the end of the hall.  He didn’t pay much attention at first, but seconds later he heard the soft sound of wheels approaching down the corridor.

Alejandro appeared at the library entrance.  Her gaze immediately turned to the desk where Mariana was placing the documents.   It stopped dead in its tracks.  For a few seconds neither of them spoke.  Alejandro looked at the papers Mariana was holding in her hand.  His expression changed slightly.

It wasn’t exactly anger, but it was a clear sign of annoyance.  Those documents shouldn’t be here.  Mariana calmly looked up at him.  Oh, sorry.  I found them among the books and thought someone had left them there by accident.  Alejandro moved a little closer in his wheelchair.  His gaze remained fixed on the papers.

These are private documents.  Mariana remained motionless for a second, then extended the papers towards him.  You’re right.  Sorry, I was just trying to organize the library.  Alejandro took the documents without saying anything else, but instead of leaving immediately he stayed there watching her for a few seconds.

Something about the way Mariana spoke seemed strange to him.  There was no exaggerated nervousness or long apologies, he simply spoke sincerely. Mariana broke the silence.  If you’d like, I can take them to your office.  Alejandro responded in a curt tone.  It’s not necessary.  Mariana nodded and placed a book back on the shelf.

The scene could have ended there, like any other awkward moment between a boss and an employee.  But then Mariana said something that no one in that house dared to say.  The library was quite messy.  I thought maybe no one had had time to check it properly.  Alejandro frowned slightly .  Nobody spoke like that in his house.

Nobody commented on the state of things as if they were giving their opinion normally.  Most employees simply nodded and followed orders.  Mariana continued arranging books while she spoke.  There are some very good books here.  Yesterday I saw one about Mexican history that I’ve always wanted to read.

Alejandro looked at her with a mixture of surprise and confusion.  I didn’t understand why that woman spoke so naturally.  Finally, he replied, “If you want to read a book, do it when you finish your work.”  Mariana looked at him with a small, grateful smile.  “Thank you.”  Alejandro turned his chair slightly, ready to leave the library, but before leaving he asked something he hadn’t expected to ask.

“How long have you been working here?” Mariana answered while arranging another book.  4 days.  Alejandro nodded silently, then left the library without saying anything else as he walked down the corridor towards his office.  Something was going through his head.  The conversation had been brief, even awkward at times.

But there was something different about that woman.  She didn’t seem afraid to talk to him.  Nor did he seem to treat him with that compassionate look that bothered him so much.  Mariana, for her part, continued working as if nothing special had happened.  For her, it had just been a normal conversation. However, from the library doorway, someone else had observed the entire scene.

Rodrigo Salvatierra was at the end of the hallway.  She had arrived a few minutes earlier for a meeting with Alejandro and stopped when she heard voices in the library.  She hadn’t heard the entire conversation, but enough to note something she did n’t like.  Alejandro had spoken with the new employee for longer than usual.

Rodrigo narrowed his eyes slightly as he watched Mariana arrange the books.  She said nothing, she just turned around and walked calmly towards Alejandro’s office , but a small unease was already beginning to form in her mind, one that still had no name, but that would soon begin to grow, because in a house where everything worked under clear rules and well-learned silences, the presence of someone who spoke naturally could become a problem.

And Rodrigo was not a man who would tolerate problems within matters he considered under his control. That night, the Villaseñor mansion was especially quiet.  Outside, the wind moved the branches of the garden trees and from time to time the distant sound of a car passing on the road could be heard.  Inside the house, almost all the employees had already finished their tasks.

Martin had left the kitchen tidy.  Laura had turned off several lights on the first floor and Carmen was checking a list in the small staff office before going to rest.  Mariana was still awake.  It was her second week working there and she wanted to make sure she finished some tasks that had been assigned to her for the next day.

She was cleaning a second- floor hallway when she noticed something strange.  From the end of the corridor, where Alejandro’s room was, a sharp thud was heard.  It wasn’t very loud, but in such a quiet house it was clearly felt. Mariana raised her head.  He thought that maybe something had fallen.

He continued cleaning for a few more seconds, but then he heard another sound.  This time was different.  It was as if someone had forcefully moved something against a piece of furniture.  Mariana left the rag on the cleaning cart.  He hesitated for a moment.  Carmen had said several times that they shouldn’t bother Mr.

Alejandro for just anything, but something about those noises didn’t seem normal.  He walked slowly towards the bedroom door.  When he arrived, he heard something else.  Rapid breathing, as if someone were struggling to catch their breath.  Mariana knocked softly on the door .  There was no response.

He played again , this time a little louder. Mr. Villaseñor, there is still no response.  But the breathing could still be heard from the other side. Mariana carefully opened the door.  The scene she saw left her completely alert.  Alejandro was in his wheelchair, leaning forward, with one hand pressing on his chest.  His breathing was rapid and ragged.

Her face was pale and she had knocked over a small lamp that was on the table next to the bed.  Alejandro looked up at the door, but he seemed disoriented.  Her eyes showed a mixture of fear and despair that Mariana had never seen before.  Mariana reacted immediately, closed the door behind her, and walked quickly towards him.

“Mr. Villaseñor, don’t worry, I’m here.”  Alejandro tried to speak, but the words didn’t come out clearly.  His breathing was still rapid.  Mariana crouched down in front of him to be at his level.  Look at me.  Breathe with me. Alejandro seemed to be fighting something inside his chest.

Her hands were trembling slightly.  Mariana took one of his hands firmly, not with pity, but with confidence.  Listen to my voice.  Inhale slowly.  That is.  Now exhale. Alejandro tried to keep up with the pace she set.  At first he didn’t succeed.  His breathing was still erratic.  Mariana remained calm.   He spoke again in a calm tone.

Inhale slowly again.  I count.  One two three.  Now exhale.  Little by little the rhythm began to change. Alejandro’s breathing began to get longer.  She was still trembling, but she no longer seemed completely out of control.  Mariana did n’t let go of his hand, she continued to guide him patiently.

After several minutes, Alejandro’s breathing finally began to stabilize.  Her chest no longer rose and fell as forcefully.  The color in her face began to slowly return.  Silence filled the room again, but now it was a different kind of silence.  Alejandro kept looking at Mariana as if he were still trying to understand what had happened.  Mariana spoke softly.

Does this happen to you often?  Alejandro took a few seconds to respond.  Sometimes Mariana nodded.  Anxiety attack.  Alejandro lowered his gaze for a moment.  He didn’t seem comfortable talking about it.  Mariana did n’t persist with questions, she just got up and picked up the lamp that had fallen to the floor.

Then he placed a chair near the bed.  Would you like to lie down for a while?  Alejandro hesitated, but finally nodded.  Mariana helped him get closer to the bed.  With care and patience, she managed to position him so that he could lie down.   It wasn’t easy, but Mariana did it naturally, as if she had already helped someone before.

When Alejandro was lying down, he closed his eyes for a few seconds. Her breathing was calmer now, but her face still showed tiredness.  Mariana sat down in the chair next to the bed.  Alejandro opened his eyes again.  I thought I was going to have a heart attack .  Mariana shook her head. Anxiety attacks feel very intense, but they pass.

Alejandro looked at her with curiosity.  How did he know what to do?  Mariana shrugged slightly .  My mom had something similar. I learned to help her when it happened to her. Alejandro remained silent.  The room was calm.  Now only the soft sound of the wind could be heard outside. Several minutes passed without either of them speaking.

Alejandro stared at the ceiling as he tried to fully regain his composure.  Mariana remained in the chair, attentive in case he felt ill again.  At one point, Alejandro turned his head towards her. You could have left.  Mariana looked at him with a simple expression.  Yes, but I didn’t want to. Alejandro did not respond.

Something about that answer left him thinking.  I wasn’t used to someone staying alone because they wanted to.  As time went on, Mariana’s body began to feel tired.  It had been a long day, and the tension of the moment had also exhausted her.  He leaned his back against the chair and closed his eyes for just a moment.

Alejandro also ended up falling asleep after a while.  The room fell silent. Outside, the night continued to slowly advance.  The hours passed without either of them moving.  When the first light of morning began to enter through the window, Alejandro opened his eyes.  For a few seconds she didn’t remember what had happened.

Then he saw the chair next to the bed.  Mariana was there asleep.  Her head was tilted slightly to one side and her hands rested on her legs. Alejandro watched her in silence.  Something inside him shifted in a way he had n’t expected.  For 8 years no one had stayed by his side like that. Not out of obligation, not for work, simply because he decided to do it.

Alejandro continued to look at her as the dawn light slowly filled the room, and for the first time in a long time, the loneliness that always accompanied him seemed a little less heavy. The morning light began to fill the room little by little.  First it entered as a soft strip through the window, then it illuminated the floor, the wall and finally reached the bed where Alejandro was lying down.

He had been awake for several minutes, but he wasn’t moving.  Her gaze remained fixed on the chair next to the bed.  Mariana was still asleep there, just as she had been during the night.  Her head was slightly tilted to one side and her breathing was calm, like that of someone who had fallen asleep after many hours awake.

Alejandro watched that scene with a strange feeling in his chest.  For 8 years, no one had stayed in their room after a crisis.  When those difficult nights occurred, the nurse would make sure he was stable and then leave.  Everything was correct, professional, and organized, but different.

Mariana wasn’t there because of a medical obligation or a work order, she had simply stayed. Alejandro looked down for a moment, thinking about what had happened the night before.  She remembered the feeling of despair when her breathing became uncontrollable, the fear that appeared every time she felt her chest close up.

He also remembered Mariana’s calm voice, guiding him to breathe.  It was curious.  She had received treatments, therapies, consultations with specialists, but the calm that she managed to transmit to him had been different, simpler, more human.  Alejandro looked back at the chair.  Mariana moved slightly, as if her body were beginning to react to the change in light.

She blinked a couple of times before opening her eyes completely.  For a few seconds she seemed confused.  Then he remembered where he was.  He immediately straightened up in the chair and looked towards the bed.  “Ah, good morning.”  Alejandro continued watching her.  “Good morning.” Mariana rubbed her face a little, still showing signs of tiredness.

“Sorry, I think I fell asleep.” Alejandro responded calmly.  “Yeah.” Mariana quickly got up from the chair.  “I should have gone to my room.” Alejandro shook his head slightly. “It doesn’t matter.”  Mariana moved a little closer to the bed.  “How does it feel?”  Alejandro took a deep breath before answering.

Better.  Mariana nodded in relief.  I’m glad to hear it.  For a few seconds neither of them said anything else.  The moment had a tranquility that was not common in that house.  Mariana walked to the window and slightly opened the curtain to let in more light.  The garden appeared on the other side of the glass, green and silent as every morning.

When she turned back to Alejandro, she noticed something different in his expression.  It wasn’t a smile, but neither was it the usual harshness he had seen in the previous days.  Alejandro seemed more relaxed.  Mariana spoke naturally.   I’m going to get you some water.  Alejandro nodded.  Mariana left the room and walked to the kitchen.

At that time, Martín was already preparing breakfast. The aroma of coffee filled the place. Martin looked up when he saw her come in.  Good morning.  Mariana responded with a tired smile.  Good morning.   He drank a glass of water and went back to the second floor.  When she returned to the room, Alejandro was sitting in his wheelchair again.

Mariana handed him the glass.  Alejandro drank some water and then left it on the table.  Thank you.  Mariana leaned slightly back against the chair she had used during the night.   It was nothing.  Alejandro looked at her for a few seconds before speaking again.  You stayed for many hours.

Mariana responded simply .  Yes. Alejandro frowned slightly, not out of anger, but out of curiosity.  Because?  Mariana shrugged naturally, because she needed to at that moment.  Alejandro did not expect such a direct answer.  He remained silent for a few seconds.  Most people would have said something like it’s my job or I was just helping out.

But Mariana didn’t talk about duties or rules, she only said that she stayed because he needed her.  Alejandro looked back towards the window.  Outside, the sun was already fully illuminating the garden.  The jacaranda leaves moved gently in the morning breeze. After a moment, Alejandro spoke again.  You don’t have to do that.

Mariana frowned slightly. What thing?  Stay.  Mariana looked at him with a calm expression.  Nobody forced me.  Alejandro did not respond.  Something about that conversation made him feel uncomfortable and curious at the same time. For years he had become accustomed to keeping his distance from everyone.

It was easier that way, but Mariana didn’t seem to follow that invisible rule that existed in the house.  For her, everything seemed simpler.  A few minutes passed in silence.  Then Mariana spoke again. I should have some breakfast.  Alejandro looked at her .  I’m not hungry.  Mariana gently crossed her arms.

Maybe I should eat something .  Alejandro raised an eyebrow. Surprised by the firm but calm tone in which she spoke, Mariana added, “After a night like that , the body needs energy.” Alejandro watched her for a moment longer, then let out a small exhalation that almost sounded like a very soft laugh.  ” Okay, Mariana,” she smiled slightly.

“I’m going to ask them to bring him something light.” He left the room and went down to the kitchen.  As she walked down the hallway, Carmen appeared from the stairs.  I was looking for you.  Mariana responded calmly.  I was with Mr. Villaseñor.  Carmen raised her eyebrows.  All good.  Mariana nodded.  She had an anxiety attack last night.

He’s better now.  Carmen sighed with worry. That happens from time to time.  Mariana noticed something in his tone, as if the situation was known to everyone in the house, but no one talked about it much. Mariana ordered breakfast and went back to the second floor.  When he returned to the room, Alejandro was looking out the window.

Mariana placed the tray on the table.  Here you are.  Alejandro looked at the plate.  Toast, fruit and coffee.  Mariana took the chair again.   Eat a little.  Alejandro looked at her with a thoughtful expression.  After a moment, he picked up the cup of coffee.  As he took his first sip, he looked at Mariana again.

There was something about her presence that broke the heavy silence of the house, something simple that he hadn’t felt in a long time.  And although he still didn’t fully understand it, he was beginning to notice that something inside him had changed since the night before.  A small, almost imperceptible, but real change.  The days after that night began to feel different inside the Villaseñor mansion, although no one could explain exactly why.

The place was still the same, the long corridors, the constant silence, the immaculate gardens, everything was the same on the outside, but something had changed in the atmosphere.  And that change had a lot to do with Mariana. From that early morning when she fell asleep next to Alejandro’s bed, the way they treated each other began to gradually change.

It wasn’t something sudden.  No one in the house could have pointed to the exact moment it started, but small details began to be noticed.  Alejandro, for example, began to leave his office more often.  Before, I used to spend almost the entire day locked up there looking at reports or simply observing out the window without speaking to anyone.

Now, from time to time, he would appear in the library or in the garden.  He didn’t say much, but at least he no longer completely avoided the spaces in the house.  Mariana continued doing her job with the same dedication as always.  She cleaned the hallways, organized rooms, and helped in the kitchen when needed.  But unlike the other employees, she did n’t change her behavior when Alejandro was around.

She didn’t nervously lower her gaze, nor did she speak in too low a voice.  I simply treated him with respect, but also naturally.  One Tuesday afternoon something happened that the other employees would notice for days.  Alejandro was in the back garden, near the jacaranda tree that had been growing there for years.

The garden was one of the few places in the house where Alexander used to spend some time.  From her wheelchair, she watched the purple flowers falling to the ground like small splashes of color.  Mariana went out into the garden with a small toolbox.  Carmen had asked him to check some flowerpots that were damaged near the terrace. Mariana approached the area where the plants were and began to work.

Alejandro was a few meters away.  For several minutes, no one said anything; only the soft sound of the wind moving the leaves could be heard.  At one point, Mariana looked up and saw Alejandro looking at the tree.  Beautiful tree.  Alejandro took a second to respond.  Yes. Mariana looked at the flowers that covered part of the lawn.

There was one like it in my neighborhood. Alejandro turned his head slightly towards her.  Ah, yes.  Mariana nodded as she adjusted one of the flowerpots. When it bloomed, the ground was covered in purple petals.  The neighborhood kids used to play at collecting them like they were confetti.  Alejandro listened in silence.

Mariana continued talking while she worked.  We always ended up covered in color.  Alejandro stared at the tree for a moment longer.  Then he asked something he himself hadn’t expected to ask.  Do you miss your neighborhood? Mariana shrugged with a slight smile.  A little, but I have a job here and that’s important.

Alejandro nodded slowly.  Mariana finished adjusting the flowerpot and stood up.  As he did so , he noticed something curious.  Alejandro continued to watch her, but not with that distant look he usually had.  He seemed interested in the conversation.  Mariana spoke again naturally.  She always goes out into the garden in the afternoon.

Alejandro responded after a few seconds. Sometimes.  Mariana looked around.  It’s quiet here.  Alejandro responded in a more relaxed voice than usual.  Yes, very quiet.  Mariana let out a small laugh.  Perhaps too calm. Alejandro raised an eyebrow.  Too much. Mariana crossed her arms.  Well, nobody talks much.

Alejandro watched her attentively.  It didn’t seem like a criticism, more like a sincere observation.  Mariana added, “Sometimes it seems like the house is empty.”  Alejandro let out an exhalation that almost sounded like a short laugh.  Sometimes it seems that way to me too.  Mariana didn’t answer right away, she just looked at him curiously.

That phrase had come from Alejandro with a sincerity that was not common in him.  For a few seconds, silence settled between them again, but this time it wasn’t awkward, it was a peaceful silence.  Mariana finally spoke.  Whenever you want to talk, I ‘m here.  Alejandro did not respond immediately, he only nodded slightly.  At that moment, from one of the windows on the second floor, someone was watching the scene attentively.

Rodrigo Salvatierra was standing inside Alejandro’s office .  She had arrived that afternoon to review some financial documents and as she approached the window she saw Alejandro in the garden.  At first he didn’t pay much attention to it, but then he noticed something that made him frown.  Alejandro was talking to the new employee.

Rodrigo squinted slightly as he watched from above.  I couldn’t hear what they were saying, but I could see something that seemed strange to me.  Alejandro was relaxed, he even seemed more attentive than usual. Rodrigo had been working with him for years and knew perfectly well what his usual behavior was like.  Alejandro didn’t talk to the employees.

much less did he spend so much time talking to one of them.  Rodrigo crossed his arms as he continued to look towards the garden. Something about that scene bothered him, not because the conversation was important, but because it represented a change.  And Rodrigo didn’t trust the changes. Outside in the garden, Mariana gathered her tools and prepared to return to the house.

Before leaving, he looked at Alejandro one last time.  Well, I’m going to keep working.  Alejandro nodded.  Mariana started walking towards the back door of the mansion, but before she entered she heard Alejandro’s voice behind her.  Mariana.  She stopped and turned around.  Yes. Alejandro looked at her for a moment before speaking.

Thanks for the other night.  Mariana smiled simply.  No problem.  And then he went back into the house.  Alejandro stayed in the garden looking at the jacaranda tree.  The flowers continued to fall slowly onto the grass.  And although he did n’t say it out loud, an idea appeared in his mind that had n’t visited his thoughts for years.

Perhaps things could still change. Meanwhile, from the office window, Rodrigo continued to silently observe everything , and what he saw was beginning to worry him more than he was willing to admit.  For years, Rodrigo Salvatierra had learned to move within Alejandro Villaseñor’s life with a calmness that seemed natural.

To anyone looking from the outside, Rodrigo was simply the  family’s trusted administrator, the man who helped keep in order the businesses that had made the Villor family millionaires for decades.  He would arrive at the mansion in an elegant suit, speak with confidence, and always carry a folder full of reports, contracts, and figures that Alejandro barely glanced at, but the truth was more complicated than that calm image.

Rodrigo had long been accustomed to making decisions without anyone questioning him too much.  After Alejandro’s accident, that freedom had grown even more.  During the first few months, everything was completely logical.  Alejandro was in the hospital undergoing surgeries and treatments. Someone had to take care of the companies while he recovered.

Rodrigo assumed that role without difficulty. Alexander trusted him.  They had worked together for years.  However, what began as a temporary responsibility ended up becoming something much bigger.  As time went on, Alejandro lost interest in business.  He reviewed some documents, signed important contracts, but he no longer had the energy or focus he once had.

Rodrigo knew it and took advantage of the situation intelligently.  He began to handle financial operations with less supervision, moving investments, closing deals, making decisions that previously would have gone directly through Alejandro.  Everything seemed to be working fine. Companies continued to generate money and no one asked uncomfortable questions.

Rodrigo enjoyed that feeling of control.  He didn’t need to steal large amounts or make overly obvious moves.   It only took small adjustments to certain operations, commissions that disappeared into hard-to-trace accounts, and investments in projects where he also had hidden interests.  Nothing too obvious, nothing that would raise immediate suspicions.

Alejandro, trapped in his own silent routine inside the mansion, did not check those details.  For Rodrigo, that situation was perfect.  For years everything remained the same.  Alejandro kept his distance from the outside world, and Rodrigo ran the business freely. But in recent weeks something began to change, and that change had a name: Mariana Ríos.

Rodrigo did not trust people who came to disrupt the balance he had so carefully built.  From the first day he saw Mariana in the house, something about her attitude caught his attention.  She didn’t seem intimidated by the mansion’s atmosphere.  He did not speak in that submissive tone that many employees adopted when they were near Alejandro.

And what worried Rodrigo most was something else. Alejandro seemed to react differently when she was around.  The scene in the garden a few days earlier had been enough to set off an alarm in his head.  Rodrigo knew Alejandro better than almost anyone. She knew how to recognize when something was changing in her behavior.

That afternoon, after observing their conversation from the window, Rodrigo remained silent inside the office for several minutes.  He looked at the papers on the desk, but his mind was elsewhere.  He didn’t like variables he couldn’t control.  And Mariana was beginning to feel like one of them.  He decided he needed to know more about that woman, not out of curiosity, but as a precaution.

That same week he began making some discreet calls.  Rodrigo had contacts in many places, people who knew how to investigate without making too much noise.  In a few days he obtained basic information.  Mariana Ríos was 31 years old.  She had worked in various domestic jobs in different parts of the city, nothing out of the ordinary.

He came from a humble family, with no legal record or major problems.  His life seemed simple, too simple for someone who could pose a real threat. But Rodrigo didn’t trust appearances.  I had seen too many times how small situations ended up becoming complicated over time. One afternoon he arrived at the mansion a little earlier than usual.

Carmen greeted him in the hallway as he took off his jacket.  Good afternoon, Mr. Rodrigo. Rodrigo responded with a friendly smile.  Good afternoon, Carmen.  Mr. Alejandro is in his office.  Carmen nodded.  Yes. He arrived from the garden a little while ago.  Rodrigo walked towards the main hallway, but before going up the stairs he asked a casual question.

By the way, how has the new employee been?  Carmen thought for a moment. Mariana.  Rodrigo nodded slightly. Yes. Carmen replied in a calm tone.   He works well and is responsible.  Rodrigo tilted his head as if the answer seemed interesting to him.  It fits well into the home environment.  Carmen let out a small exhalation.

She is different from the others.  Rodrigo raised an eyebrow. Different.  How, Carmen?  He hesitated for a few seconds before answering.  He doesn’t seem afraid to talk to Mr. Alejandro.  Rodrigo hid his reaction behind a neutral expression.   I understand.  Carmen.  Continuous.  But she’s respectful, she doesn’t cause problems.

Rodrigo nodded slowly.  Thank you, Carmen.   He went up the stairs with a calm step, but his mind was already analyzing every detail.  It confirmed what he had suspected.  Mariana did not behave like the other employees, and Alejandro seemed to allow that difference.  Rodrigo arrived at the office and knocked on the door.

Forward.  Alejandro was reviewing some documents when Rodrigo entered. Good afternoon, Alejandro.  Alejandro looked up .  Rodrigo, take a seat. Rodrigo sat down at the desk while placing his folder on the table.  They started talking about business as usual, financial reports, recent investments, pending decisions.

The conversation flowed normally, but Rodrigo kept noticing small details.  Alejandro seemed more attentive than on other occasions.  He asked questions about some numbers, and even asked to review a couple of documents more carefully.  Rodrigo responded calmly.  But something inside her was tensing up.  That kind of attention hadn’t been typical of Alejandro for years.

After almost an hour of conversation, Rodrigo closed the folder.  I think that covers the important stuff for today.  Alejandro nodded. Rodrigo got up, but before leaving he asked a seemingly casual question. By the way, I’ve noticed you’ve been spending more time in the garden lately. Alejandro responded calmly.  Yes. Rodrigo smiled slightly.

It’s good to see you more active.  Alejandro said nothing.  Rodrigo walked towards the door, but before leaving he added something else.  The new employee seems efficient. Alejandro looked directly at him.  Yes it is.  Rodrigo held that gaze for another second, then smiled cordially and left the office. As she walked down the corridor, her expression slowly changed.

There was no longer a smile on her face.  Something was moving inside that house.  It’s still a small thing, but enough to make him uncomfortable.  Rodrigo didn’t yet know if Mariana represented a real problem, but one thing was clear to him.  He wasn’t going to allow anyone to disrupt the control he had built up over so many years without first making sure he understood exactly what was going on.

Time began to pass with a different kind of calm.  Inside the Villaseñor mansion, it wasn’t a noisy or obvious change, but little by little the atmosphere of the house no longer felt as heavy as before.  The employees started noticing it first.  Alejandro no longer stayed locked up in his office all day .

Some mornings he would go to the library, other times he would appear in the garden or even stay a few more minutes in the dining room after breakfast.   He did n’t talk much, but his presence was different.  He no longer seemed so distant.  Mariana also noticed that change.  Since that night when she helped him during the anxiety attack, the relationship between them had grown naturally.  It wasn’t planned.

They simply started talking more often.  Sometimes they were short conversations while she was organizing books in the library.  Other times they would meet in the garden and share a few minutes of simple conversation. Alejandro discovered something curious. Mariana wasn’t trying to impress him or treat him like he was special because of his money.

When I spoke to him, I did so with the same naturalness as I would speak to anyone else.  That was something Alejandro hadn’t experienced in many years.  One Saturday afternoon, the sun was beating down on the gardens. Mariana was cleaning a table on the back terrace when Alejandro appeared in the hallway that connected to the garden.

He stopped near the veranda while observing the scenery. From there you could see a large part of the city in the distance.  Mariana finished cleaning the table and left the folded rag on the cart.  Then he came a little closer.  Beautiful view.  Alejandro nodded. Yes. Mariana rested her arms on the railing and looked towards the city.

I had never been in such a tall house. Alejandro turned the chair slightly towards her.  Where did you live before?  Mariana responded without complications.  In a neighborhood south of the city. Small houses, noisy streets. Alejandro listened attentively.  Did you like living there?  Mariana smiled a little.

Yes, it was simple, but people knew each other.  There was always someone chatting outside in the afternoon.  Alejandro looked down at his hands for a moment.  Then he said something that seemed to come out without thinking too much. Almost nobody talks here.  Mariana let out a small laugh.  I already realized that.

Alejandro looked up at her.  Does it bother you?  Mariana shook her head.  No, it ‘s just different.  The wind gently moved some leaves in the garden as they talked.  A few seconds of silence passed, but this time it wasn’t awkward.  Mariana looked at Alejandro with curiosity.  The house has always been like this. Alejandro thought for a few seconds before answering.

No, before friends would come over, there were meetings, music.  Mariana looked at him attentively.  Before the accident, Alejandro nodded slowly.  Mariana didn’t say anything for a moment.  I didn’t want to ask questions that might make him uncomfortable, but Alejandro continued talking on his own.  Everything changed after that night.

Mariana turned completely towards him.  Alejandro was looking towards the garden, but his expression was different, more open than usual.  Mariana spoke softly.  It must have been very difficult. Alejandro let out a small exhalation. Yes, for years she thought her life was over.  Mariana watched him in silence.  Alejandro continued.

When you get used to living a certain way and suddenly it all disappears, you don’t know what to do with the rest of your time.  Mariana listened attentively.  Alejandro rarely spoke so much about his life. Alejandro turned his head towards her, but lately things feel a little different.  Mariana tilted her head curiously, different.

As Alexander looked her straight in the eyes.  lighter.  Mariana felt something move inside her chest.  It wasn’t exactly a surprise.  Deep down, she had noticed that change too. Alejandro continued speaking, but this time in a more serious tone.  I think it has something to do with you.  Mariana blinked, taken a little by surprise.

Alejandro nodded in agreement with me.  Since you arrived, the house doesn’t feel the same anymore.  Mariana didn’t know what to answer immediately.  His first reaction was to laugh a little, trying to downplay the situation.  It’s probably just a coincidence. Alejandro shook his head.  I don’t believe it .  Mariana looked at him silently.

Alejandro seemed to be struggling with his own words, as if he wasn’t used to saying what he really felt.  Finally, he spoke again. Mariana, I think I’m falling in love with you.  Silence fell between them in an almost tangible way.  Mariana felt her heart beating faster. For weeks she had tried not to think too much about what she felt when she was near him.

She had noticed how his presence made her feel calm, how their conversations had become important to her.  But hearing those words directly from Alexander was something completely different. Alejandro continued speaking, now with a certain tension in his voice.  I know this may sound strange.  I’m your boss, too.  Well, you know.

She glanced briefly down at her legs before continuing.  I didn’t expect to feel something like that again. Mariana took another step closer to him. Alejandro looked up at her, perhaps expecting an awkward response or a polite rejection.  But what he saw in Mariana’s face was not rejection, it was something deeper.

Mariana took a deep breath before speaking.  I thought it was only happening to me.  Alejandro frowned slightly, confused.  What are you talking about?  Mariana smiled with a mixture of nervousness and sincerity. Same here.  Alejandro looked at her, uncomprehending for a second.  Then her eyes opened slightly.  “You too,” Mariana nodded.  Yes.

Alejandro remained completely still for several seconds, as if his mind was trying to process what he had just heard.  Mariana spoke again .  I didn’t fall in love with your money or the house.  I fell in love with the person you are when you talk to me.  Alejandro felt something he hadn’t felt for many years, a mixture of excitement and nerves that ran through his chest.

Mariana leaned slightly towards him and took his hand.  It was a simple gesture, but full of meaning.  Alejandro squeezed her hand gently.  At that moment, neither of them knew exactly what would happen next.  But they both understood something very clearly.  What had begun as a simple conversation between a lonely man and a new employee had now become something much deeper, something that would change both of their lives in ways they could not yet imagine.

And somewhere in the house, someone else was beginning to notice that this closeness was becoming increasingly evident.  The days after that conversation on the terrace, many things changed between Alejandro and Mariana.  There were no announcements or big scenes.  No one in the house heard a formal statement or saw a dramatic moment.

From that day on, they simply began to look at each other differently. Alejandro looked for more excuses to leave his office, and Mariana found moments to stay a little longer when she finished her tasks near him. The conversations between them became longer.  Sometimes they talked in the library, other times in the garden, other times simply in the dining room when they happened to be there in the morning.

They didn’t just talk about important things.  Sometimes they were simple stories from the past, memories of Mariana’s childhood or anecdotes from Alejandro before the accident.  It was a relationship that grew slowly, as if they were both learning again how to trust someone.  But as that closeness grew, there was also someone else watching every detail closely.

Rodrigo Salvatierra had been noticing the change for several weeks. Alejandro was more present in the business conversations, asked more specific questions about the companies, and seemed to have more energy. Rodrigo already knew that Mariana had something to do with it, but he wasn’t entirely sure how far that influence extended.

One afternoon he decided to check it out for himself. Rodrigo arrived at the mansion earlier than usual.  Carmen greeted him in the hallway as he walked towards the stairs.  Good afternoon, Mr. Rodrigo. Good afternoon, Carmen.  Mr. Alejandro is at home.  Yes, it’s in the garden.  Rodrigo nodded with a friendly smile and walked towards the back of the house.

When she went out onto the terrace, she saw the scene she had secretly expected to find.  Alejandro was in the garden under the jacaranda tree.  Mariana was near him, sitting in a wooden chair as they talked calmly. Alejandro even seemed to be laughing at something she had said.  Rodrigo stood still for a few seconds, observing from the shadow of the terrace.

He did n’t like that at all.  It wasn’t just a casual conversation; there was trust between them.  Too much confidence. Rodrigo took a deep breath before approaching with a firm step.  Good afternoon. Alejandro looked up.  Rodrigo. Mariana also turned her head when she heard the voice.  Rodrigo watched them both with a smile that seemed cordial, but his eyes were analyzing every gesture.

I hope I’m not interrupting.  Alejandro responded calmly.  We were just talking.  Rodrigo nodded slowly.  I noticed it.  His gaze shifted towards Mariana for a second. Mariana remained calm and responded respectfully.  Good afternoon, Mr. Rodrigo. Rodrigo tilted his head slightly. Good afternoon.  Then he looked back at Da.  Alexander.

We need to review some important documents when you have a moment.  Alejandro nodded.  I’ll be at the office in a few minutes.  Rodrigo responded with the same calm smile.  Perfect.  He turned around and went back inside the house, but his mind was already making decisions.  That same afternoon, after the meeting with Alejandro, Rodrigo left the office and walked down the second-floor hallway.

I knew that at that time several employees were finishing their tasks.  When he saw Mariana leaving the library, he decided to act.  Mariana, she stopped and turned around.  Yes. Rodrigo walked towards her with a calm gait. I need to talk to you for a moment. Mariana looked at him curiously.  Clear. Rodrigo pointed towards a small room at the end of the hallway.  This will be fine.

They entered the room and Rodrigo gently closed the door.  Mariana remained standing until he spoke. Rodrigo walked a few steps around the room before stopping in front of her.  His expression was no longer cordial, it was cold.  I’m going to be direct.  Mariana frowned slightly.  I didn’t understand where the conversation was going.

Rodrigo crossed his arms.  I’ve noticed that you spend quite a lot of time with Alejandro.  Mariana responded naturally.  Sometimes we meet in the garden or the library.  Rodrigo stared at her intently .  I’m not referring to coincidences.  Mariana remained silent for a moment.  Rodrigo continued. Alejandro is a vulnerable man.

Mariana responded calmly.  I don’t see it that way .  Rodrigo let out a small, humorless laugh .  Of course it is.  He has spent years in isolation since the accident.  Mariana began to feel uncomfortable with the tone of the conversation.  Rodrigo took one step closer.

Listen carefully to what I’m going to tell you.  Alejandro doesn’t need someone to take advantage of his situation. Mariana looked at him in surprise. Take advantage of me. Rodrigo put his hand in his jacket pocket and pulled out a thick envelope.  He held it up in front of her.   There’s money here, much more than you’d earn in several years working here.

Mariana didn’t take it.  Rodrigo continued speaking in a low but firm voice.  You can accept it, quit this job, and disappear from Alejandro’s life. Mariana looked at him, unable to believe what she was hearing.  He’s offering me money to leave.  Rodrigo responded calmly.  Let’s say it’s a way to avoid future problems.

Mariana slowly shook her head.  I don’t understand why he thinks I want something from him.  Rodrigo answered without hesitation, because I’ve seen this too many times.  People who approach rich men feigning affection.  Mariana felt indignation beginning to rise in her chest.  He didn’t fake anything.  Rodrigo extended the envelope a little further towards her.  Take it.

Mariana gently pushed him back with her hand.  I don’t want your money.  Rodrigo narrowed his eyes.  Think about it carefully.  Mariana looked at him firmly.  There’s nothing to think about.  Rodrigo put the envelope back in his jacket. His expression hardened.  So listen to this carefully.  If you decide to stay here and keep getting closer to Alejandro, things are going to get complicated.

Mariana held her gaze without looking down .  I’m not doing anything wrong. Rodrigo responded coldly.  We’ll see about that.  Mariana opened the door without saying anything else and left the room. She walked down the hallway with her heart pounding .  I wasn’t expecting something like this. Rodrigo remained alone in the room for a few more seconds, then he adjusted his jacket and left as well.

As she walked down the hallway, her mind was already working on the next step.  If Mariana refused to leave peacefully, then he would have to find another way to get rid of her, because Rodrigo wasn’t going to allow anyone to jeopardize the control he had spent so many years building around Alejandro Villaseñor.

The days after the conversation with Rodrigo left Mariana with a strange feeling that didn’t easily disappear.  Every time she walked through the mansion’s hallways, she remembered the moment he offered her that envelope full of money.  It wasn’t just the money that had bothered her, it was the way she spoke about Alejandro, as if he were a weak person that anyone could manipulate.

Mariana knew that Alejandro had suffered a lot after the accident, but she also knew something that Rodrigo did n’t seem to understand.  Alejandro was not a fragile man; he was a man who had spent years carrying pain in silence. That difference was important.  For several days, Mariana wondered whether she should tell Alejandro what had happened, but every time she considered it, something stopped her.

I didn’t want to create a conflict between them without being completely sure what might happen next.  Alejandro had trusted Rodrigo for years.  That working relationship had been in place for a long time .  Mariana didn’t want to cause a problem that could further complicate Alejandro’s life. Meanwhile, Alejandro seemed not to notice the weight Mariana was carrying on her head.

For him, things were progressing in a way he hadn’t experienced in a long time .  His relationship with Mariana continued to grow with a naturalness that surprised even him. There were days when they would find themselves talking for hours without realizing how much time had passed.  Other times they simply shared the silence of the garden while the wind moved the branches of the jacaranda tree.

Alejandro began to feel something he thought he had lost forever.  Hope.  One Tuesday morning, Alejandro had a scheduled medical appointment at the hospital.  It was a routine check-up that he had done periodically since the accident. Normally these visits were brief and without much new information.  The doctors checked his general condition, ran some tests, and then sent him back home with recommendations similar to the usual ones.

But that day something would be different.  Mariana insisted on accompanying him.  Alejandro hesitated at first .  I didn’t want to take time away from her work at home, but Mariana was clear.  Can I ask Carmen for permission? Also, someone has to make sure he does n’t try to skip breakfast again .

Alejandro let out a small laugh when he heard her.  He finally agreed.  The journey to the hospital was uneventful.  The city was bustling at that time of the morning. Cars, people walking along the streets, vendors on the corners.  Alejandro watched everything from the car window while Mariana sat next to him. When they arrived at the hospital, a nurse helped them enter the building.

The place was modern, with wide corridors and waiting rooms full of people talking in low voices.  Alejandro had been there many times before.  The doctor who treated him was named Ernesto Carrillo.  He was a man in his fifties who had accompanied Alejandro through the process from the first months after the accident.  When Alejandro entered the office, the doctor greeted him with a professional smile.  Alejandro, it’s great to see you.

Alejandro responded cordially. Doctor Ernesto looked towards Mariana.  Your companion.  Alejandro nodded.  This is Mariana.  Ernesto shook his hand amicably.  Nice to meet you.  Mariana responded with a simple smile. Likewise, the review began as usual.  The doctor asked some questions about Alejandro’s general condition .

He checked his blood pressure, analyzed some reflexes, and reviewed the results of recent studies. For several minutes, everything seemed to follow the same routine as always.  But after reviewing some papers on his desk, the doctor looked up at Alejandro with a different expression.  Alejandro noticed that change immediately.

What’s happening?  The doctor rested his elbows on the table.  I wanted to talk to you about something we’re investigating.  Alejandro frowned slightly.  Investigating. Ernesto nodded.  In recent months they have begun testing a new therapy for patients with injuries similar to yours.  Alejandro remained silent, listening attentively.  The doctor continued.

It is not a guaranteed treatment, it is still in the experimental phase, but some patients have shown small improvements in mobility after several months of intensive therapy.  Mariana felt her heart give a little jump.  She looked towards Alejandro to see his reaction. Alejandro was completely serious. “What kind of progress?”  The doctor answered calmly.

In some cases, patients have regained some sensation or slight movement in their feet.  Alejandro didn’t speak for several seconds.  He seemed to be processing each word carefully. Mariana finally asked, “Does that mean I could walk again?” The doctor cautiously raised a hand. “We have to be very realistic. The odds are low and the process requires a lot of physical effort, constant physiotherapy sessions and months of hard work.

”  Alejandro looked the doctor directly in the eyes.  “But is there a possibility?” Ernesto answered honestly.  Yes, there is a small possibility.  Silence filled the office for a few moments.  Alejandro looked down at his legs. For eight years she had learned to live with the idea that she would never walk again .

That certainty had been part of her daily life for so long that hearing anything different felt almost unreal.  Mariana watched his face intently.  I could see the internal conflict going through his mind.  Finally, Alejandro raised his head.  When could I start?  The doctor seemed surprised by the speed of the response.

Well, first we would need to do some additional tests to find out if your body could respond to the treatment.  Alejandro did not hesitate.   Let’s do them .  Mariana couldn’t help but smile when she heard those words.  The doctor also smiled slightly as he began to jot down some studies on a sheet of paper.  Great, let’s schedule the initial assessments this week.

Alejandro nodded with determination. While the doctor was explaining the next steps in the process, Mariana glanced sideways at Alejandro.  There was something in his face that I had never seen before.  It wasn’t just interest, it was something stronger.   It was the first spark of hope that began to ignite after so many years of darkness.

And although neither of them said it out loud at that moment, they both knew that that conversation in the doctor’s office could change the course of their lives forever.  The days that followed the consultation at the hospital brought a major change in Alejandro’s life .  The idea of that experimental therapy began to occupy a constant place in his mind.

For eight years I had lived with the certainty that I would never walk again, so hearing that there was even a small possibility had opened a door I thought was closed forever.  It was not an easy illusion.  Dr. Ernesto had been very clear.  The process would be long, painful, and full of difficult moments.   There were no guarantees of success.

But even so, Alejandro decided to try. Mariana was the first person to support him without hesitation.  From the moment they left the hospital that day, she began to talk to him about the treatment as if it were a new path they could travel together.  He didn’t talk about miracles or exaggerated promises.

I was just reminding her that every small step forward would already be a victory.  That calm attitude helped Alejandro a lot during the first few weeks. Treatment began shortly after the initial medical evaluations.  The hospital specialists designed an intensive physiotherapy program that included daily exercises to stimulate the leg muscles and improve the connection with the damaged nerves.

Alejandro had to go to the hospital several times a week.  The sessions were long and exhausting.  The first few days were especially tough.  His body wasn’t used to that kind of exertion.  After so many years of inactivity in the legs, the muscles reacted with pain and fatigue.  At times, Alejandro felt like giving up. There were days when he returned to the mansion completely exhausted, with a serious face and frustration reflected in his eyes.

But Mariana was always there.  Sometimes I would accompany him directly to the sessions at the hospital.  Other times she would wait for him at home with a hot meal and a quiet conversation to distract his mind from tiredness.  One afternoon, after a particularly difficult session, Alejandro returned to the mansion quieter than usual.

Mariana helped him into the garden, where the cool evening air usually helped him relax. Alejandro remained staring at the ground without saying anything.  Mariana sat down in a chair opposite him.  It was a long day. Alejandro let out a long exhalation.  I feel nothing.  Mariana tilted her head slightly.

What are you talking about?  Alejandro lightly moved one hand towards his legs.  I don’t feel any change. Mariana remained silent for a moment before answering.  The doctor said this would take time.  Alejandro closed his eyes for a second.  I know, but it’s hard to keep trying when it seems like nothing is happening.  Mariana watched him calmly.

Then he spoke softly.  Every day you go to the hospital is already progress. Alejandro opened his eyes and looked at her. Mariana continued.  A few months ago you weren’t even thinking about trying.  Now you’re fighting for something.  Alejandro did not respond immediately, but the words seemed to help relieve some of the weight he carried in his chest.

Meanwhile, inside the mansion, Rodrigo began to notice changes that increasingly worried him.  Alejandro was spending less time in his office reviewing business matters. Their schedules had changed to accommodate therapy sessions.  That in itself wasn’t a serious problem, but there was another detail that Rodrigo couldn’t ignore.

Alejandro was asking more questions about the state of the companies.  In some recent meetings, he had asked to review financial documents in more detail.  Rodrigo answered confidently, as always, but internally he felt increasing pressure.  If Alejandro regained his energy and became actively involved in business again, many of the decisions Rodrigo had made in recent years could come to light.

That’s why she began to observe every step of the treatment with suspicion. One afternoon he arrived at the hospital unannounced. She told the receptionist that she had come to visit Alejandro.  The staff let him through without any problems.  Rodrigo walked down the corridor to the physiotherapy room. He watched the scene from the doorway. Alejandro was on a special stretcher while a therapist helped him perform leg exercises.

Mariana was sitting nearby, watching attentively.  Alejandro’s face was tense from the effort, but he didn’t give up.  Rodrigo remained silently watching for a few seconds.  Something about that scene bothered him deeply.  It wasn’t just Alejandro’s physical effort, it was the determination I saw in his eyes.

Finally, Rodrigo approached.  Good afternoon.  Alejandro looked up when he heard her voice.  Rodrigo.  Mariana also turned towards him.  Rodrigo greeted the therapist politely before turning his attention back to Alejandro.  I can see you’re very committed to this.  Alejandro responded calmly.  I’m trying. Rodrigo crossed his arms as he looked at the therapy equipment around the room.

And the doctor really believes this can work.  Alejandro responded calmly.  He says there’s a possibility. Rodrigo let out a small, brief laugh. Medical possibilities can sometimes be misleading.  Mariana frowned slightly upon hearing that comment.  Alejandro looked at him firmly.

I prefer to try rather than be left wondering what would have happened if I hadn’t.  Rodrigo held her gaze for a second, then smiled again, although this time the smile seemed forced.  Sure, if that makes you feel better.  After a few more minutes of superficial conversation, Rodrigo said goodbye and left the hospital. As she walked toward the parking lot, her expression changed completely.

There was no longer any cordiality in his face, only worry.  If Alejandro regained some of his mobility, his life would also change.  And with those changes would come something Rodrigo had avoided for years: Alejandro’s return to full control of his own businesses.  And Rodrigo knew very well that this scenario could jeopardize everything he had quietly built for so long.

Meanwhile, inside the therapy room, Alejandro continued to exert himself with every movement, unaware that his struggle to regain the use of his legs was also beginning to move dangerous pieces in the life of someone who had been too comfortable in the shadows.  The months began to pass with a new routine in Alejandro’s life.

The days of silence inside the mansion, staring out the window, were over.  Now his time was divided between therapy sessions, home workouts, and rest periods to regain strength.  The treatment was not easy. Each session in the hospital demanded more effort than his body was used to giving after so many years.

There were days when Alejandro ended up completely exhausted, his arms trembled from the effort of holding himself up during certain exercises and his legs didn’t seem to respond as he expected, but he still came back every week.  He never missed a session. Mariana became his constant support throughout that entire process. Many times she accompanied him to the hospital, and other times she stayed at the mansion helping him with the exercises that the therapists had recommended he practice at home.

At first, Alejandro felt uncomfortable receiving so much help, but Mariana always found a way to make it seem natural.  I didn’t treat him like a patient or someone fragile; I treated him like a man who was fighting for something important.  That difference meant that Alexander did not feel humiliated or weak.

One afternoon, after several months of treatment, Alejandro was in the hospital’s rehabilitation ward.  The place had metal bars installed on the sides so that patients could hold on while practicing balance movements.  The therapist who worked with him was named Patricia.  She was a patient and firm woman at the same time.

He knew when to push himself a little harder and when to allow for rest.  That day Patricia was guiding Alejandro through a series of exercises to stimulate the nerve response in his legs.  Alejandro was sitting on a special stretcher.  While she slowly moved her feet to activate certain reflexes, Mariana sat nearby observing, as she had always learned a lot during those months.

I already understood how some of the exercises worked and knew how to recognize when Alejandro was reaching his physical limit.  Patricia spoke in a calm voice while she worked.  Let’s try again.  Alejandro nodded.  His face showed concentration.  Patricia lightly pressed an area of Alejandro’s foot with her fingers.

The response was usually minimal or nonexistent.   This had been happening for months, but this time something was different.  Alejandro frowned suddenly.  Wait. Patricia looked up.  What’s happening? Alejandro moved his head slightly, as if trying to confirm a feeling.  I think I felt something. Mariana leaned forward in the chair.  Something.

Patricia pressed the same spot on her foot again.  Alejandro reacted again.  This time his expression changed completely.  Yes, yes, I felt it. Patricia remained completely still for a second.  Then he repeated the stimulus.  Alexander’s foot made a small, almost imperceptible movement.  Mariana opened her eyes in surprise.

Patricia smiled cautiously.  That’s new.  Alejandro was staring at his own foot as if he were seeing something impossible.  For years her legs had been completely silent, unresponsive, motionless, but now she had just felt a signal.  It was small, almost insignificant to anyone who didn’t know its story, but to him it was enormous.

Mariana couldn’t contain her emotion.  Did you see it?  Alejandro couldn’t take his eyes off his foot.  Yes. Patricia maintained her professional composure, but her voice also showed enthusiasm. This is a good sign.  This means that some nerve connections are responding to the stimulus.  Alejandro raised his head towards her.  That’s good.  Patricia nodded.

It’s very good, but we’re still at the beginning. We need to continue working to strengthen that response.  Alejandro let out a long exhalation, as if a pressure that had been building up for years was finally being released a little.  Mariana smiled, unable to hide it.  For months they had waited for any sign, and finally it had appeared.

That afternoon, when they returned to the mansion, Alejandro still seemed surprised by what had happened.  Mariana walked alongside her chair as they crossed the garden.  “How do you feel?”  Alejandro responded after a few seconds.  Strange.  Mariana smiled. Good stranger or bad stranger. Alejandro looked up at the jacaranda tree that was swaying in the wind.

Good, very good. Mariana sat down in a chair on the terrace facing him.  Alejandro stared at his own legs as if he were trying to understand what had happened at the hospital. Mariana spoke with enthusiasm.  That means the treatment is working. Alejandro nodded slowly.  I never thought I’d feel anything there again.

Mariana extended her hand and placed it on his.  This is just the beginning. Alejandro gently squeezed her hand. Meanwhile, in another part of the house, Rodrigo had just received a call that left him completely paralyzed.  He was one of the contacts he had discreetly placed to stay informed about Alejandro’s treatment.

The man’s voice on the other end of the phone was direct.  There was a reaction in therapy today.  Rodrigo frowned.  What kind of reaction?  Small movements in the feet.  Nothing major yet, but the doctors are optimistic.  Rodrigo remained silent for a few seconds, then answered in a tense voice.  I understand.

He hung up the phone slowly.  He stood in his office for several minutes staring at the desk.  That news was worse than I had imagined.  If Alejandro continued to improve, sooner or later he would regain not only some of his mobility, but also complete control of his life.  And when that happened, he would begin to review everything that had happened in his companies over the past few years.

Rodrigo knew that moment could come sooner than he expected, and that idea filled him with a restlessness he hadn’t felt in a long time.  Meanwhile, in the mansion’s garden , Alejandro continued to stare at his legs with a mixture of disbelief and hope.  And for the first time since the accident, she began to believe that perhaps the impossible was not as far away as she had always thought.

The small movement that Alejandro had felt in the hospital changed something deep inside him.  For years she had lived with the idea that her body would never respond again, that her legs would remain immobile forever. But that day, when his foot reacted for the first time, it was as if a door that had been closed for a long time opened just a few centimeters.

It wasn’t a complete victory, nor even a sure promise, it was just a sign.  But that sign was enough to ignite a new determination in Alexander.  From that moment on, he began to approach therapy with even more discipline.  He no longer missed any sessions.  He even started asking for additional exercises to practice at home.

Patricia, the therapist, noticed that change immediately.  In each session, Alejandro put in more effort.  Sometimes he would end up completely exhausted, his forehead covered in sweat and his arms trembling from the effort, but he never asked to stop prematurely.  Mariana was there almost every day.  Sometimes I watched in silence, other times I encouraged him when tiredness began to take hold.

There were difficult moments, days when Alejandro felt that progress was too slow, but then another small movement would appear, another minimal sign that showed that the work was not in vain.  As the months went by, those advances began to become a little clearer. First there was sensitivity in his feet, then some involuntary movements in his toes, then small attempts to move his ankles when Patricia guided him during the exercises.

Nothing was spectacular yet, but every sign built a little more hope.  A year after starting treatment, Alejandro arrived at the hospital for a session that seemed just like all the others.  The rehabilitation room was quiet that morning.  Patricia greeted him as usual while preparing the equipment for the balance exercises.

Today we’re going to try something different.  Alejandro looked up curiously. Different as.  Patricia pointed to the metal bars installed on both sides of a small platform.  Let’s see if you can hold some weight with your legs.  Alejandro felt a small knot in his stomach.  That was a big step.  Mariana, who was sitting nearby, also straightened up in her chair.

Patricia continued speaking calmly.  You don’t have to walk yet. We will only try to help you stand up.  Alejandro took a deep breath. For years I had imagined that moment, but now that it was in front of me , excitement was mixed with fear. Patricia and another therapist stood on either side of Alejandro.  They carefully helped him to position himself in front of the bars.

Alejandro held the metal with both hands.  His arms were tense as he prepared his body for the effort.  Patricia spoke in a firm voice.   Let ‘s take it one step at a time.  When I tell you, push with your arms and try to put weight on your legs.  Alejandro nodded. Mariana watched, almost breathless. Patricia counted slowly.  One two three.

Alejandro pushed with his arms as his body rose from the chair.  For a second everything seemed to sway.  Her legs trembled unsteadily after so many years without supporting any weight, but they didn’t collapse. Alejandro was standing, not completely steady, not without help, but he was standing.  Mariana brought a hand to her mouth, unable to hide her emotion.

Patricia smiled proudly.  That is. Keep it up.  Alejandro felt a mixture of sensations running through his body.  Her legs were trembling, but they responded.  It wasn’t an illusion, it was real.  After a few seconds, Patricia spoke again.  Now try to move one foot.  Alejandro hesitated for a moment.

Then he focused all his attention on his right leg.  The movement was small, just a few centimeters forward, but it happened.  Mariana let out a laugh full of emotion.  Alejandro tried again.  This time his left foot moved forward a little too.  Patricia watched him with satisfaction.  You are walking.

Alejandro couldn’t help but smile.  It was a small smile, but full of disbelief.  For a few more minutes, they continued practicing those short steps with the help of the bars.  Every movement was slow and careful, but every step was an achievement that seemed impossible a year ago. When he finally sat back down in the chair, Alejandro was breathing with difficulty, but his face showed something that had not appeared for a long time.

Happiness.  Mariana approached immediately.   You did it.  Alejandro let out a small, tired laugh.  I think so.  That afternoon, when they returned to the mansion, Alejandro was still full of energy from what he had accomplished. Mariana walked beside him as they crossed the garden.  I can’t believe it. Alejandro looked at his legs with a mixture of surprise and pride.

Me neither.  While they were talking, Carmen appeared on the terrace.  Mr. Alejandro, Mr. Rodrigo has arrived.  Alejandro looked up .  Tell him to come into the office.  Minutes later, Rodrigo entered the office.  Alejandro was reviewing some documents when he saw him enter.  Rodrigo sat down at the desk with his usual calm.

How is the treatment going?  Alejandro looked directly at him.  I went for a walk today.  Rodrigo remained completely motionless for a second.  You walked.  Alejandro nodded.  With help.  But if.  Rodrigo forced a smile.  That’s impressive. But while Alejandro spoke enthusiastically about the progress of the therapy, Rodrigo barely listened.

His mind was elsewhere.  That news confirmed the fear that had been growing inside him for months.  Alejandro was not only regaining mobility, he was also regaining confidence, energy, and control.  At the end of the meeting, Alejandro took a folder from the desk.  By the way, I want to review some financial transactions from the last few years.

Rodrigo felt a tension run down his back.  What are you talking about? Alejandro opened the folder and pointed to several pages.  There are some transfers that I don’t remember approving.  Rodrigo kept his face calm, but his mind began to race .  Alejandro continued talking while reviewing the papers.  It might just be an administrative error, but I prefer to review it carefully.

Rodrigo nodded slowly.  Clear. Meanwhile, a feeling began to grow inside him that he could not ignore.  The control he had maintained for so many years was beginning to crack, and he knew that if Alejandro continued investigating those documents, sooner or later he would discover a truth that Rodrigo had kept hidden for far too long.

During the days that followed after Alejandro managed to stand up and take his first steps, something definitely changed inside the Villaseñor mansion.  It wasn’t just the news of his physical progress, it was the way Alexander began to move around the house.   He still used the wheelchair most of the time because his legs were still regaining strength.

But now he no longer seemed like a man locked in his own world.  There was energy in his gaze.  He was going back to rooms he had previously avoided.  He spent more time in his office reviewing documents and talking to his companies’ staff.  Mariana noticed each of those changes with pride.  Every small step forward reminded her of the long road they had traveled together since that night of the anxiety attack.

But as Alejandro recovered parts of his life, he also began to note details he had previously ignored.  The financial documents he had started reviewing were still on his desk.  For years I had signed papers without analyzing them too much.   She trusted Rodrigo and preferred not to get involved in every business decision.

But now his mind was clearer, more active, and some numbers didn’t add up.  One afternoon, Alejandro was sitting in his office with several open folders in front of him.  Mariana was nearby, arranging some books in an instant.  Alejandro frowned as he looked at a series of transfers in one of the financial reports.  Mariana noticed her expression.

All good.  Alejandro looked up.   I ‘m not sure.  Mariana moved a little closer.  What’s happening?  Alejandro pointed to the document.  These transfers do not appear in the reports I reviewed years ago.  Mariana looked at the paper, although financial details were not her specialty.

And who authorized those movements?  Alejandro responded in a more serious voice.  According to this, Rodrigo. Mariana felt a slight discomfort in her chest upon hearing that name. She immediately recalled the conversation she had had with him weeks before. Alejandro slowly closed the folder.   I’m going to talk to him again.

That same afternoon, Alejandro asked Rodrigo to come to the mansion.  Rodrigo arrived as always in his impeccable suit and with his calm demeanor, but upon entering the office he noticed something different in Alejandro’s expression.  It was no longer the distant gaze I had known for years.

There was determination in his face.  Alejandro pointed to the chair in front of the desk.  Sit down.  Rodrigo obeyed with a professional smile. Something wrong?  Alejandro pushed one of the folders towards him.  I want you to explain these transfers to me.  Rodrigo looked down at the documents. For a second, her mind searched for a way to respond normally.

These are strategic investments we made a while ago .  Alejandro crossed his arms.   I don’t recall approving these amounts.  Rodrigo calmly raised his gaze .  At that time you were going through a difficult period after the accident.  Many urgent decisions had to be made quickly.  Alexander did not take his eyes off him.

Without consulting me, Rodrigo tried to keep smiling.  It was the best thing for the companies.  Alejandro opened another folder and pointed out several more movements.  And these accounts are in the name of companies I don’t even know. Rodrigo felt a tension run down his back.  Alejandro was no longer asking simple questions, he was investigating.

Rodrigo took a deep breath before answering.  They are part of external projects.  Alejandro gently tapped the desk with his fingers.  I want to see all the contracts related to these transactions.  Rodrigo remained silent for a few more seconds.  Finally, he spoke.  Alejandro, perhaps you’re misinterpreting the numbers.

Alejandro looked at him firmly.  What I’m interpreting is that for years you handled money without my authorization. Rodrigo remained silent.  The atmosphere in the office became heavy. Alejandro leaned slightly forward in his chair.  Tell me the truth. Rodrigo clenched his jaw.  For years he had easily controlled the situation , but now Alejandro was changing.

He was stronger, more attentive, more difficult to manipulate.  Finally, Rodrigo let out a small, dry laugh. You really want the truth.  Alejandro held her gaze.  Yes. Rodrigo placed his hands on his knees and leaned forward.  Okay, I’ll tell you. For a few seconds, silence filled the room.  Mariana was at the office door.  He had returned to drop off some documents and heard Rodrigo’s last words.

Without making a sound, he remained there.  Rodrigo spoke in a colder voice than before.  For years I managed your companies because you were not in a position to do so.  Alejandro said nothing.  Rodrigo continued.  I made decisions that benefited me.  Yes, but I also kept everything running while you locked yourself in this house.

Alejandro clenched his fists on the desk.  That didn’t give you the right to steal.  Rodrigo smiled bitterly. Stealing, Alejandro, if I hadn’t been there, many of those companies would have gone bankrupt.  Alejandro raised his voice for the first time.  That doesn’t answer my question.  Rodrigo stared at him.

The tension in the room grew with each passing second.  Finally, Rodrigo spoke again.  There’s something else you should know.  Alejandro frowned.  What thing?  Rodrigo watched him with a mixture of defiance and weariness.  The accident. Alejandro felt a chill run down his spine.  What does the accident have to do with this?  Rodrigo let out a slow exhalation.  A lot.

Alejandro remained completely still. Rodrigo continued speaking with an unsettling calm.  That night on the road was not a simple mechanical failure.  Alejandro felt the air disappear from the room.  Rodrigo held her gaze.  I tampered with the car’s braking system. Mariana brought a hand to her mouth, unable to contain her reaction.

Alejandro was unable to speak for several seconds. Rodrigo continued with the same coldness. I needed you to stop controlling the companies.   It was the only way to have total freedom to run the business. Alejandro felt a mixture of fury and shock that made his hands tremble.   You left me paralyzed by money.

Rodrigo responded with a dry voice. It was a business decision.  The silence that followed was heavy, almost unbearable.  Alejandro was breathing heavily as he tried to process what he had just heard.  8 years of pain.  For eight years he believed it was all an accident, and now the truth was staring him in the face.

Mariana took a step inside the office.  Alejandro slowly turned his head towards her.  Rodrigo also looked at her, but it was too late to stop what she had just said.  The truth had finally come to light, and nothing in Alejandro Villaseñor’s life would ever be the same after that moment.  The silence that remained in the office after Rodrigo’s confession was so heavy that it seemed to fill the entire room.

Alejandro remained seated at the desk with his hands tense on the wood. For years I had carried the memory of that night of the accident, thinking it was a tragedy of fate.  For years he had rebuilt his life on that idea, but now the truth was in front of him, raw and brutal.  It hadn’t been an accident, it had been a betrayal.

Mariana remained a few steps from the door without moving.  Her eyes were fixed on Rodrigo, unable to believe what she had just heard.  Rodrigo, for his part, seemed strangely calm, as if after so many years of hiding the truth, he had finally released a weight he had been carrying inside.  Alejandro took several deep breaths before speaking.

Her voice came out low, but filled with a rage she could barely control. 8 years old.  Rodrigo did not respond.  Alejandro slowly raised his gaze towards him.  8 years living with this.  Rodrigo kept his gaze steady, although for the first time he seemed less certain.  Alejandro continued speaking.  I lost friends.  I lost part of my life.

I lost the ability to walk for years.  Rodrigo lowered his gaze slightly.  Alejandro slammed his fist on the desk, all for money.  Mariana took another step into the room.  Worried about the intensity of the moment.  Alejandro was breathing heavily.  Trying to maintain control.  Rodrigo finally spoke.  It wasn’t just about money.

Alejandro let out a bitter laugh.  Of course it was money.  Rodrigo raised his head again.  It was power.  Alejandro looked at him with contempt.  Rodrigo continued. I worked for your family for years.  I was always the employee, the man who carried out other people’s orders.  When your father died and you inherited everything, I knew I was never going to be in control of anything.

Alejandro interrupted him coldly. Then you decided to destroy my life. Rodrigo remained silent.  Alejandro picked up the phone that was on the desk.  Rodrigo watched that movement with attention.  Alejandro dialed a number and waited a few seconds.  When the call was answered, he spoke in a firm voice.

I need you to send the police to my house.  Mariana felt a small relief upon hearing those words. Rodrigo did not try to stop him.  When Alejandro finished the call, silence returned to the room.  Rodrigo slowly got up from the chair.  I guess this ends here.  Alejandro did not respond, he only looked at him with a mixture of sadness and anger.

Minutes later, the sound of vehicles approaching the entrance of the mansion was heard.  The officers entered the office and Rodrigo was arrested without resistance.  As they led him towards the door, Rodrigo looked one last time at Alejandro, but Alejandro did not return that look, he remained silent.  When the house was quiet again, Alejandro stayed alone in the office for several minutes.

Mariana remained nearby, unsure whether to speak or give her space. Finally, Alejandro raised his head. Mariana approached slowly.  Are you OK? Alejandro took a few seconds to respond.  Don’t know.  Mariana sat down opposite him.  It’s a lot to process. Alejandro nodded.  Several days passed before the house returned to some semblance of normality.

The news of Rodrigo’s arrest spread quickly. Authorities began an investigation into the companies’ finances and the sabotage that had caused the accident years earlier.  Alejandro had to give statements and review many old documents.  It was a difficult process, but also liberating.  For the first time, he understood what had really happened in his life.

While all that was happening, Alejandro continued with his therapy.  Her legs continued to slowly gain strength.  The doctors were surprised by his progress.  Months later, Alejandro managed to walk without support for several steps inside the rehabilitation room.  He still needed constant training, but he was getting stronger every day.

One quiet afternoon in the mansion’s garden, Alejandro was walking slowly across the lawn while Mariana watched him from the terrace.  Each step still required concentration, but it was no longer an impossible dream.  Alejandro stopped in front of her with a slight smile. Mariana looked at him with pride.  Look how far you’ve come.

Alejandro took a deep breath of the fresh air from the garden.   I would n’t have gotten this far without you. Mariana shook her head gently.  You did the work.  Alejandro looked at her with a serious, but warm expression.  Then he took a small box out of his jacket pocket.  Mariana opened her eyes in surprise.

Alejandro spoke in a calm voice, but full of emotion.  When you arrived at this house, I had stopped believing in many things.  I thought my life was over.  Mariana listened to him in silence.  Alejandro continued.  But you changed that. You helped me to trust in life again.   She opened the box and revealed a simple but elegant ring.

Mariana felt her eyes fill with tears. Alejandro gently took her hand. Mariana Ríos, will you marry me? Mariana didn’t hesitate for a second.  Yes. Alejandro placed the ring on her finger as they both laughed excitedly.  Months later they celebrated a simple wedding in the garden of the mansion.  It wasn’t a big or lavish ceremony, just a few close friends, flowers in the garden, and an afternoon filled with joy.

Alejandro walked on his own during the ceremony, not perfectly, but enough to remember everything he had overcome.  Time continued to move forward.  One day, while they were having breakfast together in the kitchen, Mariana arrived with a different smile on her face.  Alejandro looked at her curiously.

What’s happening?  Mariana took his hand.  I have something to tell you.  Alejandro raised his eyebrows.  Mariana took a deep breath before speaking.  We’re going to have a baby.  Alexander remained completely motionless for a second.  Then her eyes filled with tears.  For years she had thought that many parts of her life were lost forever.

But at that moment everything seemed new again. Months later a healthy baby boy was born.  When Alexander held his son in his arms for the first time, the mansion’s garden was filled with afternoon light.  Mariana sat beside him, observing the scene with a calm smile. Alejandro looked at the little boy sleeping in his arms and for the first time in 8 years a full smile appeared on his face.

It wasn’t a shy or brief smile, it was a smile full of life.  Because after everything she had lost, she had finally found something much greater than the past.  had found a new beginning.
