Terrible update on Derek Forbort after sucker punch on Saturday.

The Vancouver Canucks fan base is in an uproar and you can hardly blame them.

On Saturday night, Canucks defenseman Derek Forbort was involved in a controversial incident when he was on the receiving end of a sucker punch from Minnesota Wild forward Yakov Trenin. The two men had dropped the gloves and had agreed to fight one another, but the issue with the final punch from Trenin stemmed from the fact that both men were already down on the ice and Forbort was being held back by one of the National Hockey League officials on the ice.

Trenin would be ejected for his actions, but on Sunday we learned that no further discipline would be coming from the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety when the news was confirmed by Canucks insider Rick Dhaliwal.

I am concerned that this could set a dangerous precedent, but it would seem that the NHL does not share those concerns.

Unfortunately the news would only get worse from there for Forbort, with the news that the veteran Canucks defenseman has suffered a serious injury as a result of that controversial blow from Trenin. Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet would reveal that Forbort is now dealing with a very serious injury, a broken orbital bone.

What do you think of the ruling from the NHL? Did they make the right call?
