Ethan didn’t reach for the pen.
He couldn’t.
His eyes locked on the small engraving near the clip—a worn eagle, wings spread. Identical. Down to the scratch near the edge.

“That’s not possible,” he muttered.
Claire stepped closer. “It is.”
Lily peeked from behind him. “Dad… who is she?”
Ethan didn’t answer.
Claire’s voice softened when she looked at the girl. “Hi, Lily. I’m… someone your dad used to know.”
“From work?” Lily asked.
Claire hesitated. “Something like that.”
Ethan finally stepped aside. “Come in.”
The apartment was small. Clean, but worn. Toys in the corner. Crayons on the table. A life built carefully—quietly.
Claire noticed everything.
“You disappeared,” she said.
“I moved on.”
“You vanished.”
“Same thing.”
She held up the pen. “My father gave these to his private security team. Only six were ever made.”
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“I thought they were all gone,” she continued. “Until last night.”
Silence stretched.
Lily climbed onto the couch, watching them like a movie she didn’t fully understand.
“You were one of them,” Claire said softly. “Weren’t you?”
Ethan looked at the floor.
Fifteen years ago. Suits. Weapons. Long nights. Protecting people who lived behind gates and glass.
Protecting her family.
“I was,” he admitted.
Claire let out a shaky breath. “You saved my sister. Again.”
“Again?”
“She was eight when you carried her out of a car wreck,” Claire said. “You stayed with her until the ambulance came. She wouldn’t stop asking for you after.”
Ethan rubbed his face. “That was a long time ago.”
“Not to us.”
Lily’s voice cut in. “Dad… you used to save people?”
He looked at her.
Really looked.
Her wide eyes. No fear. Just curiosity. Pride, even.
“I used to do a different job,” he said gently.
“Like a superhero?”
He almost laughed.
“Something like that.”
Claire stepped closer. “Why did you leave?”
Ethan’s hand went to the pen in his pocket.
“My wife died,” he said simply.
The room went still.
“One call,” he added. “That’s all it took. I wasn’t there. I chose work. And I lost her because of it.”
Claire’s expression softened. “Ethan…”
“So I quit,” he said. “No more missions. No more risks. Just… being a dad.”
Lily slid off the couch and hugged him tightly.
“You’re still my hero,” she whispered.
His throat tightened.
Claire watched them, eyes glistening. “You didn’t stop being who you are. You just hid it.”
“Good,” he said. “That was the point.”
She shook her head. “Not anymore.”
Ethan frowned. “What does that mean?”
“Those men last night?” Claire said. “They weren’t random.”
Something cold settled in his chest.
“They’ve been targeting my family,” she continued. “Extortion. Threats. We’ve been increasing security for months.”
“And now they’ve seen me,” Ethan said quietly.
Claire nodded. “And the video.”
He exhaled slowly.
Of course.
“You think they’ll come after me.”
“I think they already are.”
Silence.
Then—
“Cool,” Lily said suddenly.
Both adults turned to her.
“What?” Ethan asked.
She shrugged. “Bad guys always come back. That’s when the hero wins again.”
Claire blinked.
Ethan stared at his daughter… then let out a quiet breath.
A real one this time.
Not fear.
Decision.
He stood up straighter.
“Okay,” he said.
Claire’s eyes sharpened. “Okay?”
“I’ll help,” he said. “But on my terms.”
Relief flooded her face. “Anything.”
“My daughter comes first. Always.”
“Of course.”
“And I’m not going back to who I was.”
Claire tilted her head. “Then who are you now?”
Ethan looked at Lily, who was now drawing something at the table.
A man with a cape.
Standing in the rain.
Protecting someone.
He smiled faintly.
“I’m still figuring that out,” he said.
Outside, a car slowed near the building.
Neither of them noticed.
Not yet.
But something had already changed.
The quiet life Ethan built was over.
Not because he lost it—
But because, this time…
He chose to step back into the storm.
