As part of the ongoing fallout from Iowa firing head coach Fran McCaffery, the Hawkeyes have now lost the commitment from one of their highest-rated recruits in the modern era.

Consensus four-star small forward Joshua Lewis is reopening his recruitment following McCaffery’s firing. Rivals ranked Lewis as the nation’s No. 37 player overall, which would have made Lewis the highest-rated player in the modern era to sign with the Hawkeyes if he had inked with Iowa.

Instead, the 6-foot-7, 185 pound small forward is reevaluating his recruitment.

“After careful consideration and discussion with my family, I have decided to decommit from the University of Iowa and reopen my recruitment,” Lewis told 247Sports. “I was excited about playing for Coach Fran at the University of Iowa but after the recent changes to the coaching staff I feel it’s in my best interest to explore other opportunities.”

Lewis committed to the Hawkeyes in January over fellow finalists Auburn, Marquette, Michigan State and NC State.

A product of Blake High School in Tampa, Fla., this is now the second time that Lewis has reopened his recruitment process. Lewis was originally committed to South Florida, but he decommitted after the tragic and sudden passing of South Florida head coach Abdur-Rahim last October.

Iowa signed three-star center Badara Diakite out of South Kent in Connecticut in November and the Hawkeyes also hold a commitment from three-star forward Dezmon Briscoe out of Crispus Attucks in Indianapolis.
