“We Didn’t Lose the 4 Nations Final, We Lost to the Refs”
Matthew and Brady Tkachuk did not shy away from addressing their feelings after the highly contested 4 Nations Final, where they felt that questionable officiating played a crucial role in the game’s outcome. Matthew, who plays for the Florida Panthers, shared his disappointment, emphasizing that it wasn’t their opponents who handed them the loss but rather the referees’ decisions.
“We didn’t lose the 4 Nations final, we lost to the refs,” Matthew stated, detailing how certain pivotal moments in the game were marred by controversial calls. Matthew and Brady both pointed out that, while the team played hard and put up a strong fight, the inconsistency in officiating seemed to have a major influence on the result. They explained that when it came down to crunch time, the referees made several calls that both players felt were unfair and impacted their team’s ability to perform at their best.

Brady Tkachuk, known for his grit and leadership with the Ottawa Senators, echoed his brother’s sentiment. He discussed how difficult it is to focus on the game when decisions by the officials are unclear or inconsistent. The Tkachuks’ frustration was clear, as they explained that such officiating decisions are especially tough to swallow when so much effort and preparation have gone into the match.
The Impact of Officiating in High-Pressure Games
For the Tkachuks, the issue wasn’t just about one game but about a larger trend they’ve noticed in high-stakes matchups. Both brothers explained how officiating can have a massive impact on the flow of the game, and when key calls are made—or missed—it can feel like the game is slipping from their control.
Matthew went on to explain that, as a professional athlete, you learn to play through adversity and adversity is part of the game. However, when the outcome of the match feels like it’s influenced by inconsistent refereeing, it becomes a much tougher pill to swallow. Brady also highlighted how difficult it is to maintain composure when the officiating is inconsistent and when crucial decisions are made in critical moments.

Florida Panthers star forward Matthew Tkachuk is making the most of his time off the ice.
Tkachuk has been battling an injury that he suffered during the 4 Nations Face-Off and has yet to play for the Panthers since the tournament ended last week.
During his recovery over the past few days, Tkachuk has made a couple high-profile guest appearances on popular talk shows: one on television and one on a podcast.
First it was Monday’s appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, which Tkachuk certainly appeared to do quite well at.
Then on Wednesday, the popular podcast New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce invited Matthew and Brady Tkachuk on the show.
The Tkachuk brothers spoke about growing up playing hockey together and how their father, former NHL star Keith Tkachuk, helped them along the way to reaching the NHL.
They also discussed the experience of playing together and what it meant to each of them, the pride they have for playing for Team USA and how they’re looking forward to doing it again at next year’s Olympics.
There are some cool stories and several great laughs and chirps during the extended chat, so it’s definitely worth a listen.
