The Edmonton Oilers are already dealing with significant injuries while missing McDavid and Draisaitl, and now Stuart Skinner may have sustained devastating injury against the Dallas Stars.
Just a few games ago, Stuart Skinner took some head contact against the Winnipeg Jets, which could possibly compound with tonight’s incident.
Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner leaves with terrifying injury
Midway through the third period o against the Stars, Skinner came to the top of the crease to cover the puck in a routine play. Mikko Rantanen was hunting for the puck, and inadvertently struck Skinner’s head with his knee while moving by quickly.
Immediately, things didn’t look good for Skinner. The Oilers goalie dropped to the ice and layed motionless for a few moments before struggling to get to his feet. After a lengthy conversation with the Team Doctor, Skinner left the ice on his own while shaking his head.
After the game, Coach Knoblauch confirmed that Skinner will not travel with the team on their trip to Seattle – which isn’t a good sign for his health.
The immediate concern for Skinner with such a hard head contact and his reaction is a concussion, especially considered he was pulled by concussion spotters earlier this week.
Head injuries can be extremely severe and unpredictable, which could be catastrophic a few weeks away from the playoffs.
Oilers weakest position takes a hit with Stuart Skinner injury
The Oilers goaltending has struggled for most of the season, and if they lose Stuart Skinner, it’ll put even more stress on their weakest point.
Skinner’s injury could very well linger into the playoffs now, which would force the Oilers to rely on a Calvin Pickard and Olivier Rodrigue tandem for the Stanley Cup playoffs in McDavid’s 10th year. Not adding a goalie for this season, as insurance for Skinner struggling or an injury, was a failure by management.
Hopefully Skinner is able to get the best case scenario from the Team Doctors on his injury condition from tonight, and will be ready to roll for the playoffs. If not, the Oilers will be in real trouble.
