Why the Jacksonville Jaguars should or shouldn’t pursue wide receiver Cooper Kupp
After releasing six or seven players over the span of a day and a half, the Jacksonville Jaguars then got right to work with free agency. It’s all final now that the new league year has officially started. And maybe the Jags won’t slow down.
So far they have somewhat addressed every need that was supposed to be addressed, for the most part, anyways. They had a big to-do list coming into free agency, and the list has certainly got shorter and will be shortened by a wide margin by the time the 2025 NFL Draft gets here. But, while everything has been addressed, whether it’s a small adjustment or a big one, there is still work to be done. For the Jaguars, after letting Evan Engram go, who just signed a big deal with the Denver Broncos, and trading Christian Kirk to the Houston Texans, they need more weapons.
If you take away the majority of the weapons that Lawrence had at his disposal, how is the offense supposed to be good? They need more weapons, and they will likely address that in the draft, but they could also do it now, even with some top free agents off the board. There is one player who was just released, and it makes too much sense.
Jaguars should pursue Cooper Kupp
The Jaguars let go of some weapons in Kirk, Engram, Devin Duvernay and Josh Reynolds. So, even after signing Dyami Brown and two tight ends, two that are primarily blocking TEs, the Jaguars still need weapons.
It’s worth noting that the Jaguars’ new general manager, James Gladstone, was with Cooper Kupp when the two were with the Los Angeles Rams just last season. The relationship is there. The need for the Jaguars is there. And, he may be cheap, but this is free agency — Kupp has to want the Jaguars as much as the Jaguars want him. But, we will get there when we get there. The main question at hand is if the Jags should or shouldn’t pursue him.
They absolutely should.
Kupp still has some juice left. But, injuries are what slowed him down, and that’s the scary part. However, last year, as a second and sometimes third option and also playing through injuries, Kupp still finished with 700 receiving yards and six touchdowns, and that was in 12 games.
He’s not “washed” as the kids say. The issue is, you know you’re not getting a full season out of him, and you can’t have the portion of the season he ends up missing being at the most crucial moments. I say the Jaguars take a chance. According to Spotrac, Kupp’s market value is currently at $11 million a year. The Jaguars currently have around $35 million available in cap space, and need around $10 million or so available.
It’s up to the Jaguars to make the call.
