Over the weekend, the New York Yankees made their first round of roster cuts at spring training, sending pitchers Sean Boyle, Chase Hampton (who is out for the year), Cristian Hernandez, Kevin Stevens and Jayvien Sandridge as well as outfielder Brennen Davis to minor-league camp.
On Monday, two more joined that group, as infielder Roderick Arias and pitcher Cam Schlittler were sent down as well. It’s all procedural, as neither are close to making their MLB debuts, with 2025 likely becoming a big developmental season for them.
It is important to note, however, that both were performing nicely to kick off the spring. Arias was 3-for-7 with a double and a run scored while Schlittler tossed 4 1/3 innings, giving up just one run on two hits and four walks while striking out five. Not bad for a couple of guys still trying to find their way in the organization.
As the roster withers down to the group of 26 heading north, fans should be on top of every decision in order to track the up-and-comers throughout the season. Schlittler made waves in High-A last season before he was perhaps irresponsibly expedited to Triple-A. Meanwhile, Arias got his first full professional season under his belt after being signed as the top international free agent back in 2022.

Meanwhile, the Yankees are gearing up for a Monday night game against the Pittsburgh Pirates where they will deploy their most complete lineup yet. Max Fried is making his Yankees debut and, outside of Austin Wells and Jasson Dominguez not being in action, this is the closest thing to an Opening Day group we’ve seen.
With Giancarlo Stanton, DJ LeMahieu, Luis Gil and Scott Effross likely to miss the start of the season and Clarke Schmidt’s status still up in the air, the Yankees have plenty of experimenting to do over these next two weeks to get their lineup configuration and starting rotation right.
We’re just hoping the injuries stop at some point so the depth can survive the start of the season. Getting looks at Grisham, Dom Smith, Alex Jackson and Oswald Peraza will be helpful, and more of Ben Rice should be a plus.
