Self-confessed Kansas City Chiefs fanatic Caitlin Clark sent a congratulatory message to Philadelphia Eagles star Cooper DeJean despite her beloved team’s defeat at Super Bowl LIX.

Andy Reid’s all-conquering outfit slumped to a crushing 40-22 defeat in the NFL’s showpiece at New Orleans’ Caesars Superdome on Feb. 9. With the Chiefs chasing an unprecedented “three-peat” success in the Big Game, the Eagles were able to spoil the party with an emphatic victory.

Led by MVP Jalen Hurts, Philadelphia avenged an overtime loss against the same opponents in the 2023 edition of the Super Bowl to reign supreme this time around. Despite her sorrow at seeing her childhood team lose at Super Bowl LIX, WNBA superstar Clark enjoyed a polite exchange with Eagles cornerback DeJean after the result was confirmed.

That is according to the NFL rookie, who like Clark, represented Iowa at collegiate level before making the transition to the professional game in 2024. DeJean spoke of their conversation on “Up & Adams”, saying: “She sent me a nice message congratulating me. That was nice of her being a Chiefs fan and all.”

As the Eagles starlet alludes, the Indiana Fever point guard has made no secret of her lifelong love of the Chiefs, having been introduced to the team by her father and brother. She said on Travis Kelce and Jason Kelce’s ‘New Heights’: “I’ve been a Chiefs fan since I was a young girl.

“My brother was a Chiefs fan, my dad was a Chiefs fan. I had cousins in Kansas City that were Chiefs fans. Honestly it was just something all I knew. In our basement, we had a Chiefs vending machine. We had those toy helmets that were Chiefs that you could run around in the yard and I could knock helmets with my brothers.”

As for DeJean, there was no mistaking his joy at lifting the Vince Lombardi Trophy at the first attempt earlier this month. Looking back over a memorable experience in New Orleans, the youngster admitted: “[It] Still doesn’t feel real to me that that happened.

“I’m just incredibly grateful to be a part of this group and this defense and what we’ve been able to accomplish all year. I couldn’t have done it without those guys up front and all of us in the back end just working together like we have all year to make that play possible.”

The former Hawkeyes star also paid tribute to his fellow Iowa alum Clark after her own success during her maiden campaign as a professional. The 23-year-old was named as Rookie of the Year in her inaugural term in Indianapolis after a record-breaking season with the Fever.

DeJean revealed his admiration for his sporting peer adding: “Obviously, Caitlin’s a special player. She’s done so much for women’s basketball as well and the University of Iowa in general. So I have nothing but respect for her.”
