Last week, the best NHL players were in town for the Four Nations Showdown. The comments about the reception they received were numerous and all very positive.

One of those who seemed to love the atmosphere at the Bell Centre was Sam Bennett.

The Florida Panthers forward did not hesitate to say that the atmosphere in the Montreal arena, especially during the Canada vs. USA game on that famous Saturday night, was special.

Kent Hughes Has Unexpected Ammunition to Convince Sam Bennett

As of now, even though he seems to enjoy playing for the Panthers, Bennett has yet to sign a contract extension to stay warm next year. He could very well test free agency on July 1.

If that happens, there’s no doubt that Kent Hughes will be on high alert!

Let’s not kid ourselves, Montreal definitely lacks a second-line center. The Canadiens are also missing a player who brings grit and toughness while also being able to produce regularly, just as Bennett does.

Without doing anything that could be considered tampering, the Canadiens’ GM received valuable help. Bennett got to experience Montreal and see how the organization operates. He also got familiar with the Bell Centre and its passionate crowd, as well as the CN Complex, which was used for Team Canada’s practices.

He also likely crossed paths with Jeff Gorton, Kent Hughes, and even Geoff Molson at the Canadiens’ facilities. The Habs’ executives, while being careful, had a great opportunity to make a first impression.

Georges Laraque Weighs in on Sam Bennett’s Value

A few weeks ago, a debate took place on BPM Sports between Georges Laraque and Stéphane Gonzalez. It was about Bennett’s signing and the type of contract he should be offered.

Much to Gonzalez’s dismay, who did not like the idea at all, Laraque suggested a 7-year, $49M contract. A deal that would take the forward to age 35..

Before the Four Nations Showdown break, Bennett had 18 goals and 17 assists for a total of 35 points in 55 games. Don’t expect massive production from him, as he has never had a season of more than 49 points (2021-2022).

However, he did rack up 15 and 14 points in the playoffs over the last two seasons in 20 and 19 games, respectively. His 60 penalty minutes during the 2022-2023 playoffs (compared to 17 in 2023-2024) are also quite remarkable.
