Not long ago, Yankees pitcher Clarke Schmidt was sidelined due to a “cranky back.” The Bronx Bombers kept him out of spring training, hoping to bring him back before the regular season. Following Schmidt’s exit, Luis Gil was reportedly out with a shoulder injury.

There is no timeline for Gil’s return, but Yankees fans can be relieved since Schmidt is poised to return soon. Luckily for the Yanks, they might return to their five-man rotation soon.

When Is Clarke Schmidt Returning?

On Saturday, Schmidt resumed pitching with a live batting practice session. The pitcher mentioned that he felt great after throwing one inning. Schmidt says he feels comfortable, but the Yankees will give him another live batting practice session before he gets into the Grape Fruit League. Schmidt is expected to return by next week and start prepping for the regular season.

“I felt great out there and had no issues today. I feel like I’m back on track, which is a relief,” Schmidt said.

Clarke Schmidt Looks To Have A Comeback Season For The Yankees

Schmidt has much to compensate for, especially after missing out in 2024. Despite finishing a 5-5 record, Schmidt held a strong 2.85 ERA. He struck out 93 opponent hitters in 85.1 innings pitched. Schmidt also recorded a spectacular 1.18 WHIP.

The Yankees need Schmidt to return, but most importantly, he needs to stay healthy. Another injury could be risky for Schmidt, especially since he took a while to recover. With Gil staying out for a while, Schmidt has to step in to ease the pressure on Gerrit Cole and Max Fried.

Fried will make his spring training debut for the Yanks this week. Cole and Fried are the top pitchers who will lead the starting rotation. Carlos Rodon is picking up the pace, but Marcus Stroman has not been up to the mark.

Hence, Clarke Schmidt needs to return soon. When the Yankees enter the 2025 season, they have a six-man pitching rotation. However, Gil has put them in a fix. To make matters worse, Giancarlo Stanton will be out for a while. There’s no timeline for Stanton’s return, and the Yankees need to find their designated hitter. Yankees fans were unhappy with Marcus Stroman’s recent performance.
