Video shows how McDavid’s liquor store trip with his fiancé took an ’embarrassing’ turn

A video of Edmonton Oilers fans encroaching on Connor McDavid’s personal space has gone viral as a lesson in what not to do when approaching celebrities.

In the 38-second clip, which has been shared on X and other social media platforms, McDavid and fiancé Lauren Kyle are surrounded by three fans, two of which are wearing Edmonton Oilers jerseys.

They can be seen touching McDavid and bumping up against him as he loads alcohol into his trunk, with one fan even taking a seat on the vehicle while another asks for a hug.

McDavid looks to be trying to leave the scene as soon as possible as the fans keep a camera on him.

 

The alcohol was presumably part of the team’s celebration after the Oilers reached their first Stanley Cup final in nearly two decades following a 2-1 victory over the Dallas Stars on Sunday at Rogers Place.

The video quickly drew ire on social media, with many users calling the behaviour of the fans “cringey” and “embarrassing.”

“It is one thing to say congrats and be excited but it is another thing to just stick a camera in his face and harass them both,” Oilers fan Gabby, @Gabby964, posted on X.

Others expressed surprise that McDavid, who signed a $100 million contract with the Oilers in 2017, was purchasing his own alcohol.

It’s not the first time McDavid has found himself in an awkward situation with fans.

In 2017, a photo went viral of a clearly uncomfortable McDavid posing with two fans in an airport.

 

In that instance, the fans once again crowded his personal space, flanking each side of the Oilers captain as they grasped his hand and arm.

McDavid later addressed the viral photo in a podcast with Puck Soup.

“I was walking into the security line and I had actually walked past them. And then they say ‘hey Connor can we get a picture?’ and I say ‘sure’ and sure enough they come up to me and start hugging me.

Both of them. Both of them were hugging me.

And sure enough there was someone who had their phone ready to take a picture. They had already turned around and were ready for the picture and took the picture before I had even realized what was going on. The whole thing lasted seven seconds and then I was out of there.”

Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals is set for Saturday as the Oilers try to become the first Canadian team to bring the trophy north of the border since the Montreal Canadiens in 1993.
