Two top NFL teams are reportedly heavily involved in trade talks involving San Francisco 49ers star wide receiver Deebo Samuel.

The 29-year-old Deebo Samuel requested a trade from the 49ers after a disappointing 2024 season that saw the defending NFC champions finish last in the NFC West with a 6-11 record. Samuel is entering the last season of a three-year extension he signed in 2022.

According to Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports, the Houston Texans and Washington Commanders “have had significant interest in” making a blockbuster trade for Samuel. Schultz added that trade talks have progressed with both teams.

Also worthy of note: Schultz adds that the Denver Broncos and Pittsburgh Steelers also have interest in Deebo Samuel, though the Texans and Commanders “are believed to be the most aggressive.”

Houston will likely lose Pro Bowler Stefon Diggs to free agency, and the Commanders have longed for a No. 2 receiver to complement Terry McLaurin. The Texans went to the Divisional Round despite a rash of injuries, and the Jayden Daniels-led Commanders made a surprise run to the NFC Championship Game.

Samuel is coming off a disappointing season that saw him record just 51 receptions for 670 yards, three touchdowns, 136 rushing yards and one rushing score. His best season came in 2021, when Samuel had 1,770 yards of offense and 14 total touchdowns.

Deebo Samuel Will Benefit From A Fresh Start

Samuel hasn’t come close to matching his career year in 2021, and it’s largely because the 49ers have too many other weapons on offense. That includes Christian McCaffrey, Brandon Aiyuk, George Kittle, Jauan Jennings and 2024 first-round pick Ricky Pearsall.

With a new home, Samuel would be a No. 1 or 1B receiver and thus get every opportunity to regain his All-Pro form. And at just 29 years of age, there’s plenty of good football left in him.
