The Tragic Story Of 9-Year-Old Shannon Matthews’ Abduction
When is a kidnapping not a kidnapping? It all depends on your point of view. Take the abduction of Shannon Matthews, a true crime story that still fascinates all these years after it happened. 9-year-old Shannon Matthews went to school as usual on the morning of February 19th, 2008. But after a class trip for the weekly swimming lesson in the afternoon, she vanished.
That evening, her mother Karen called the police and reported her daughter missing. Shannon lived with her six siblings, their mom and her mom’s boyfriend, Craig Mian, on the Morside estate in Dubbor, UK. The area had a reputation for being a rough place to live, but residents immediately leapt into action after Shannon disappeared.
The following day, while 200 West Yorkshire Police officers looked for her, Julie Bushby, chair of the Moreside Tenants and Residents Association, organized a community search, >> right? Can you just come in so they can tell you where to search? >> But the days dragged on and Shannon was still nowhere to be found.

One day after the disappearance, an exhausted looking Karen Matthews stood before news cameras. [music] If anybody’s got my daughter, my beautiful princess daughter, please bring her home. >> According to Natalie Murray, the Matthews neighbors, speaking to the BBC, Karen was told in no uncertain terms to let the police deal with the press side of things.
That doing anything without their agreement could put Shannon’s life at risk. Karen went on TV anyway. And something else bothered Murray, who shared she’d never called Shannon a princess. Someone must have told her to say that. On March 1st, wearing a t-shirt that read, “Have you seen Shannon Matthews?” with a picture of her daughter underneath.
Karen made another emotional plea for her daughter’s safe return. This time at a nationwide press conference. While hundreds of police and body dogs searched for the missing youngster, she gazed sadly at a small teddy bear. Sounds tragic, unless you’re Murray, who revealed that the bear wasn’t even Shannon’s, saying, “She came down the stairs with it before the press conference and I asked if it was Shannon’s.” She said, “I don’t know.
” >> And so, were you alone in that opinion? Alone in your suspicions? >> Yes. As the nation’s hearts went out to the devastated mom, people close to Karen were slowly starting to ask uncomfortable questions. Then she threw [music] investigators a huge curveball. During the press conference, Karen drops a bombshell.
>> Well, I think there’s somebody out there who knows Shannon cuz supposed to probably know me as well. >> On the night of May 3rd, 2007, in a Portuguese resort town, Kate McCann went to check on her children and discovered 3-year-old daughter Meline missing from her bed. By 2026, [music] despite a multi-million dollar investigation, Mattie has still not been found.
But Mattiey’s case was still very much in the public eye when Shannon Matthews went missing in West Yorkshire. It didn’t take long for the British press to compare the two, and Shannon’s family took the brunt of things. It came out that in 2002, social services put Shannon and one of her siblings on the at risk [music] register amid evidence of low-level neglect.
But the situation wasn’t bad enough for the children to be removed. It did concern me that Karen might have neglected the children and that’s why I kept a close eye on the children. >> Meanwhile, Karen’s boyfriend Craig denied tabloid allegations that he had hit Shannon. It shadowed the family and locals during the [music] search and did little to enhance the family’s image when compared to the middle class.
>> He worked [music] as a fish monger in a local supermarket and didn’t seem [music] the the brightest. As the tabloids poured scorn on the DeWuce estate, questions swirled about Karen’s lifestyle and parenting choices. Shannon’s disappearance exposed an ugly truth. Because of her background, which she could do nothing about, her case wasn’t as interesting to the public as the more photogenic and affluent Macccans.
Shannon had been missing from her Dubbury Moore home for 24 days when West Yorkshire police got the break they needed. An extended family member asked if they’d looked into Paul Drake, Craig Mian’s uncle, who had changed his name to Michael Donovan after the lead character in the 1980s sci-fi drama V. After forcing their way into Donovan’s silent, apparently empty flat, investigators suddenly heard a child’s voice coming from a bed.
>> She said, “Stop it. You’re frightening me now.” >> Police found Shannon, who was groggy and frightened, but very much alive, hidden in the bed’s storage drawer. He was less than a mile from home. We thought we were looking for a a little girl’s body and she was alive and well. >> Donovan was discovered hiding in the bed’s other drawer and quickly taken into custody.
The community and police were overjoyed, but Karen’s response to finding her daughter safe and sound raised more than a few eyebrows. According to the Guardian, after an officer broke the news to her, she remarked, “I like the ringtone on your mobile.” Karen then went shopping. Meanwhile, Michael Donovan was talking to the police.
When Michael Donovan was arrested, um he shouted out to the officers, “Get Karen [music] down here. Uh she’s she’s in it with me.” >> Donovan then sang like a bird, telling investigators everything. [music] Donovan and Karen had been behind Shannon’s kidnapping. Inspired by the 2.5 million pound reward offered for the safe return of Maline McCann, they hatched a plan to stage Shannon’s kidnapping and hold on to her until they could collect some reward money.
In this case, it was just over £55,000 offered by tabloid newspaper The Sun. There were also reports of people contacting the Macan family search fund asking for money for Shannon’s campaign. >> This beggars believe this really, doesn’t it? >> In another twist, Karen blurted out a confession to Murray, Bushby, and a police support officer as they waited in a police car.
She said she wanted to leave me, but lamented, “Everything went wrong.” Following her arrest, Detective Constable Nick Townsen said Karen was more interested in prison food than her daughter’s condition, sharing she never once asked about her daughter. She showed no remorse. It was all about her. On April [music] 8th, 2008, Karen was charged with perverting the course of justice and child neglect.
The story that unfolded at Leed’s Crown Court was dramatic. During questioning, Donovan, who pleaded not guilty to charges of kidnapping and false imprisonment, insisted Karen was a driving force behind the plot. He told the court she kept threatening him and he was frightened of her. He explained, “Karen told me I had to follow the plan.
” He cut such a sad figure that even his own attorney called him a quote pathetic and adequate. But Karen was defiant on the stand. >> Instead of admitting it, you’ve tried to implicate everyone except yourself. >> She blamed Donovan as well as Mian’s family and her own and changed her initial story after Shannon was found.
But before Karen’s arrest, she’d said that Donovan took Shannon while she and Mian were fighting. Later, Karen said she’d arranged for Donovan to take Shannon and planned to leave Mia, who again was Donovan’s nephew. [music] So, that’s a stretch. Either way, the evidence against her and Donovan was damning.
During the trial, which included clips of her appeals to the press, it emerged that Shannon had been drugged [music] with Tamasipam while she was held, and she’d been tethered to a beam in the roof by a length of elastic tied around her waist to keep her from leaving. Even worse, the court heard that forensic tests proved Shannon had been given sedatives [music] for almost 2 years before her abduction.

Donovan claimed that she’d happily played games and watched DVDs, that they’d even snuck out, albeit with her on a leash, a couple of times during the search. But the court was [music] told the experience had left Shannon disturbed and traumatized. On December 5th, 2008, Karen and Donovan were both found guilty of kidnapping, false imprisonment, and perverting the course of justice.
[music] As he handed down their sentences, Justice Mcome said, “It is impossible to conceive how you could have found it in you to put this young girl through the ordeal that you inflicted upon her.” The judge called it incomprehensible that Karen and Donovan did and said nothing while their family and friends searched for Shannon.
Not to mention the£3.2 million pounds spent by West Yorkshire [music] police on the search. He sentenced them both to 8 years in prison. Detective Superintendent Andy Brennan, who spearheaded the investigation, explained, “Michael Donovan is an accomplished liar.” Following his arrest and during this trial, he has attempted to portray himself as a weak-willed individual [music] who only acted under duress.
We have never accepted this as an accurate reflection of his involvement in Shannon’s kidnapping. As for Karen, Brennan added, “It is difficult to understand what type of mother would subject her own daughter to such a wicked and evil crime. >> Does she deserve a second chance?” >> Karen Matthews [music] was released after just 4 years in around April 2012, shortly after Donovan was freed.
Harry Fletcher of the National Association of Probation Officers said Matthews was out on license, meaning she would have to remain [music] in the UK, but not return to Dubsbury, stay away from Donovan, and report to her probation officer. Fletcher added, “Because of her notoriety, special measures will be taken to protect her from threats.
” That didn’t prevent Matthews from stepping [music] back into the media spotlight in 2018, still claiming innocence despite having previously confessed to the kidnapping. Speaking to the Mirror, she said, “I’m not Britain’s worst mom. I didn’t kill anybody.” She didn’t leave it at that either, insisting, “You can’t kidnap your own child.
” She also told the newspaper she wanted to take a lie detector test to prove she was telling the truth [music] and complained, “Prison made me weaker. I don’t feel like the same person anymore. I was beaten up inside because of who I was. Once I threw a snowball with a rock in it at me, and other times [music] I was punched. I didn’t say anything.
I was too scared.” Karen Matthews is thought to be living in the south of England under a new name. And Michael Donovan died in 2024 [music] after being disowned by his family. But very little has been revealed about Shannon’s whereabouts. [music] Shortly after being found at Donovan’s flat, the police offered her the chance to see her mother, but she declined.
[music] Shannon and her six siblings were placed into foster care, but the then 9-year-old was given a new identity before being placed with a family. The high court also ensured Shannon would have lifelong anonymity. During Karen Matthews trial, the court was told that the youngster needed psychotherapy and regularly had nightmares.
[music] As of 2025, a special order prevents anyone, particularly the British tabloid media, from contacting Shannon. Nick Townsen, [music] who was part of the investigative team in the original case, said, “I just hope that really she’s been given a chance for a better life, and she’s made [music] something out of herself, hopefully.
” Many years have passed since Shannon’s ordeal, but public interest in the case has never really faded. The 2008 cuttingedge documentary Shannon Matthews: The Family Story, perhaps offers the closest view of Karen [music] and Craig Mian. Since then, filmmakers have continued to pour over every facet of the case, looking for new insights.
Millions tuned in to Shannon, the mother of all lies, a BBC panorama program that also aired in 2008, as well as the two-part 2017 drama, The [music] More Side, which focused on the community response to the abduction, including Julie Bushb and Natalie Murray’s efforts. The Moride finally showed the locals in a human light in contrast to the media that had written off the DeWate [music] years earlier.
More recently, Amazon Prime’s 2025 series, The Hunt for Shannon Matthews, reignited public interest in the story. But not every exploration of the case, has met with a warm reception. In 2010, [music] controversial comedian Wayne Clemens under the stage name and the Gang released a CD of a musical he’d [music] written about Shannet’s abduction.
>> Sh. [singing] 12 years later, Clemens debuted Shannon Matthews the musical at the Edinburghough Fringe Festival. And in November 2024, a film version hit British cinemas. Build by Metro as the definitive sing along to one of the UK’s most bizarre true crime cases. Some were outraged by the songs. [music] >> Another viewer grudgingly wrote, “Despite the data subject matter, the film was well researched, well acted, and well produced.
