Jason didn’t run.
Not because he was brave.
Because there wasn’t time.
The dogs were already mid-air.

He ripped off his reflective jacket and flung it hard to the left. The fabric slapped into the mud just as the Dobermans veered—instinct locking onto the brightest target.
“Go!” Jason grabbed the man by the arm. “Move!”
The guy was weightless. Barely conscious. Jason half-dragged, half-carried him toward a row of massive drainage pipes lying on their sides nearby.
They dove into one just as the dogs tore into the jacket behind them.
Jason clamped a hand over the man’s mouth.
Footsteps thundered outside.
“Someone’s here!” a voice shouted. “Check the pipes!”
Flashlights sliced through the rain. Shadows passed inches from the pipe’s opening.
Jason didn’t breathe.
Didn’t blink.
Didn’t move.
Minutes stretched like hours… until finally—
“Nothing. They couldn’t have gone far. Spread out.”
The voices faded.
Jason stayed frozen long after the last sound disappeared.
Only when the man in his arms went limp did he dare move again.
By sunrise, they were miles away.
Jason’s apartment wasn’t much—one room, peeling paint, barely enough space to breathe—but it was hidden. For now.
He cleaned the man as best he could.
Bruises. Burns. Injection marks.
Whoever had him… hadn’t just kidnapped him.
They’d been breaking him.
But when Jason tried to open the man’s clenched fist—
The reaction was instant.
Violent.
“No!” the man snarled, gripping tighter.
Whatever was in there… mattered.
A lot.
Later, as the man devoured a bowl of instant noodles like he hadn’t eaten in weeks, Jason turned on the old TV.
Breaking news.
Atlas Development Group.
Jason’s jaw tightened.
There he was.
Ethan Carter—the face of the company. The man who signed the order that destroyed Jason’s home.
“…we are deeply concerned,” Ethan said, voice smooth, controlled. “My adoptive father, who suffers from severe mental decline, has gone missing. We are offering a $200,000 reward for his safe return.”
Jason’s blood went cold.
He turned.
The man had dropped the bowl.
His entire body was shaking.
Eyes locked on the screen.
Not confused.
Not broken.
Terrified.
And furious.
Everything after that happened fast.
Too fast.
The mob found Jason’s apartment that same day.
Someone talked.
Or someone watched.
They broke in.
Beat him within an inch of his life.
Smashed everything.
And before leaving—
They locked the door from the outside.
And tossed a lit cigarette onto the floor.
Fire spread like it had been waiting.
Smoke swallowed the room.
Jason couldn’t breathe.
Couldn’t stand.
But above him—
The man was still tied up in the attic.
Trapped.
Jason coughed, blood filling his mouth.
This was it.
The end.
Then—
A thud from above.
Desperate.
Panicked.
Alive.
Jason’s eyes snapped open.
“No…” he rasped.
Not like this.
He dragged himself up the burning stairs, skin blistering, lungs screaming. He tore the bindings with his teeth, ignoring the pain, ignoring everything.
“Hold on to me,” he whispered.
They crashed through the window seconds before the roof collapsed.
Hours later…
They hid in a cemetery.
Jason collapsed.
The man didn’t.
For the first time—he stood straight.
Calm.
Focused.
Different.
He pulled something from his mouth.
A metal tooth.
Twisted it.
Click.
Inside—
A tiny USB.
By morning, sirens filled the air.
SWAT surrounded the cemetery.
Black SUVs skidded to a stop.
Ethan Carter stepped out, gun drawn, eyes burning.
“You should’ve stayed out of this,” he said, aiming at Jason.
Jason didn’t move.
Didn’t flinch.
He was too tired.
Too broken.
Too done.
The gun cocked—
And then—
“FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!”
Chaos exploded.
Helicopters.
Sirens.
Armed units flooding in.
Ethan froze.
The man beside Jason stepped forward.
No longer shaking.
No longer broken.
“You made one mistake,” he said coldly. “You didn’t check the tooth.”
Ethan’s face drained of color.
“…Dad?”
The USB held everything.
Money laundering.
Illegal land seizures.
Names. Numbers. Offshore accounts.
Including Jason’s case.
Including his wife.
One month later—
Atlas collapsed.
Executives arrested.
Ethan Carter sentenced.
Jason sat in a hospital bed, arm healing, ribs still cracked.
The man—Mr. Carter, the real one—walked in.
Not broken anymore.
Not forgotten.
He placed a check on the table.
Jason pushed it back.
“I didn’t do it for money.”
The old man smiled.
“I know.”
He slid it away.
“Then help me build something better.”
A foundation.
For people like Jason’s wife.
For people no one saved in time.
Jason looked out the window.
Sunlight.
Clear sky.
For the first time in years—
It didn’t feel heavy.
“Yeah,” he said quietly. “Let’s do that.”
