Kirby Dach’s Future in Montreal in Jeopardy After Kent Hughes’ Uncertain Remarks
The excitement surrounding Kirby Dach among Montreal Canadiens fans has diminished significantly. Just a short time ago, there was hope that he could develop into the team’s number-one center, potentially even surpassing Nick Suzuki. However, after another injury-riddled season and inconsistent performances, many are beginning to question whether he has a long-term future with the franchise.

Frustration Grows Over Dach’s Struggles
Dach, 24, has been plagued by injuries throughout his career, and this season was no different. His inability to stay healthy has frustrated both the organization and the fanbase. Many Canadiens supporters and analysts are beginning to lose faith in the forward, believing that his potential is unlikely to be fully realized due to ongoing health concerns and his lack of consistent impact on the ice.
The Canadiens acquired Dach from the Chicago Blackhawks in 2022 with hopes of rejuvenating his career. While he showed flashes of brilliance in his first season with Montreal, injuries have once again hindered his development. This season, he finished with just 22 points in 57 games and a disappointing minus-29 rating—far from the production expected from a top-six center.
Kent Hughes’ Comments Add to the Uncertainty
General Manager Kent Hughes addressed Dach’s future during his post-trade deadline press conference, but his comments were far from reassuring.
“We’ll see how Kirby heals and how that impacts his game in the future. Of course, it’s going to be an unknown variable,” Hughes stated.
While Hughes didn’t outright dismiss Dach’s future with the Canadiens, his words, body language, and recent rumors suggest the organization is already considering other options. Reports indicate that Hughes made a strong push to acquire Buffalo Sabres center Dylan Cozens, raising further speculation that the Canadiens might be looking to move on from Dach as their second-line center.

A Decision Looms This Offseason
With Dach under contract at $3.37 million per year until 2026, his contract isn’t an immediate burden on the Canadiens’ salary cap. However, if the organization no longer sees him as a key part of their long-term plans, they could explore trade options this summer.
One thing is clear: management is evaluating alternatives, and if Dach doesn’t prove he can stay healthy and be a consistent contributor, his days as Montreal’s second-line center may be numbered.
Expect more clarity on the situation in the coming months, but don’t be surprised if Kirby Dach is wearing a different jersey by next season.
